At first blush, winter weddings may evoke thoughts of everything that can go wrong with a formal affair: Cathedral-length trains dragged through gray snow; barren, indoors-only portrait sessions; and guests whose teeth chatter as they commute in the cold between your ceremony and reception. But winter weddings have a way of winning you over. Because though the weather outside may be frightful, brides and grooms make their celebrations utterly delightful with warming fires, fur stoles, white flowers, and even seasonal treats like s'mores and piping hot cocoa.
Winter weddings are so fanciful that dozens of celebrities have held their own November, December, January, and February fêtes. Several embraced the season: Snow-capped mountains served as the backdrop for Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson's wedding in Aspen, Colorado, where the couple kept guests warm with an outdoor fire; while others, including Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, and Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter, wed on one of winter's many holidays, from New Year's Eve to Valentine's Day.
Others used winter as the perfect reason to escape to warmer weather for their weddings. Solange Knowles and Alan Ferguson said "I do" in New Orleans for more temperate winter weather and Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra married in India's tropical climate. Some couples such as Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman escaped to faraway islands to exchange vows with their toes in the sand and the ocean breeze in their hair.
