There are plenty of reasons why people choose to stay abstinent until they've said "I do." Some do it to protect their hearts, some to strengthen their nonphysical relationship with their spouse-to-be, and some due to their religious beliefs. Take it from celebrities like Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon, and Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel, all of whom have been up front about their decisions to wait to have sex with their significant other until after marriage.

And they're not alone: Many other celebs have spoken out about celibacy, whether they've been wearing a purity ring since they were tweens—like Kevin Jonas did up until his 2009 wedding to his wife Danielle—or, following a history of rocky relationships, decided to recommit to a period of abstinence, as was the case for stars like Bieber, Carey, and Kerr.

Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin

The duo rekindled their romance at church, so it didn't exactly come as a surprise when they revealed in early 2019 that they planned to wait until they were officially husband and wife to have sex. (Although they didn't have to wait long, since they tied the knot in September 2018 after only about three months of dating.) "[God] doesn't ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff," Bieber told Vogue. "He's like, 'I'm trying to protect you from hurt and pain.' I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don't feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result."

The NFL star and singer haven't been shy about their joint decision to recommit to abstinence until their July 2016 wedding. "I really believe that when you focus on a friendship, you have the opportunity to build a strong foundation for a relationship," Ciara has previously explained. "And once you know you're really great friends and you're what we call 'equally yoked'—where you share the same values or the same outlook on life—it kind of sets the tone. Knowing that you'll always have the friendship and that you can always go back to it is very important, and very powerful."

Simpson, the daughter of a minister, was another young Disney star with a purity ring on her finger. After her October 2002 wedding to Lachey (which, sadly, ended in 2006), Simpson said, "Of all the things about myself, staying a virgin until my wedding night is the thing that makes me most proud...Nick was for real. He respected me for it. It was often him having to fend me off. Boy, it was hard, but he knew I'd hate myself and him in the morning."

Tamera Mowry and Adam Housley

Mowry and Housley, who now share daughter Ariah and son Aden, neither lived together nor had sex before their May 2011 wedding date. "We wanted to make sure that this relationship was what God wanted for our lives. [In order to know] if we are meant to be together, we said, 'It's got to be God's way and not our way.' We didn't want to half-step anything," she told Ebony in 2012. "So our right way was the way we felt God wanted us to do it, which was being celibate."

Before Colton Underwood, there was Sean Lowe, the first celibate Bachelor. And while Lowe wasn't actually a "virgin Bachelor" like Colton, he did decide to stay abstinent from the age of 24 until he and Giudici tied the knot in January 2014. "I was dating other girls and I started having sex, and I would feel extremely guilty afterwards. But after that guilt faded, then I'd start talking to some other girl and go down that same path of destruction," he explained. "At the age of 24 I finally became a man. I said, 'Okay, Jesus, let's do it again.' "

While Sparks used to be a purity ring wearer, she wasn't afraid to share that it had come off sometime during her long-term relationship with Jason Derulo. In the months leading up to her July 2017 wedding to Dana Isaiah, however, the singer took to Instagram to announce that she'd recommitted to abstinence.

Though his younger brothers have both admitted to taking off their purity rings well before their wedding nights, Jonas kept his on until he and Danielle had said "I do" in December 2009. "I could've gotten married the day after we got engaged. We'd have gone crazy waiting any longer," he joked at the time.

Though they weren't especially vocal about their born-again abstinence before their April 2008 wedding, Carey and Cannon (who divorced in 2014) did open up about it after the fact. "It's not that we had no intimacy, we just didn't have complete intimacy," Carey said later that year. "I definitely don't want to push it on anybody else, but we both have similar beliefs, and I just thought that it would be so much more special if we waited until after we were married. And it was, and it still is."

By the time her May 2017 wedding to the Snapchat founder rolled around, Kerr was already mom to now eight-year-old son Flynn with ex-husband Orlando Bloom. But a month before tying the knot, Kerr told an interviewer that she wouldn't be using contraception "until after we get married"—but only because it wasn't necessary until then. "He is very traditional. We can't...I mean we're just...waiting," she said.

Though he wasn't planning on publicizing his decision to remain a virgin until marrying singer Lise in July 2012, he let it slip during a 2016 appearance on The Talk,, when the hosts were discussing a recent study about millennials' increased celibacy.
