Celebrating your marriage with the trip of a lifetime loses some of its luster if you have to share the experience with tourists and other canoodling couples. Instead, opt for a honeymoon that offers a degree of seclusion, because prestige properties and attentive staff are that much better when it feels like the two of you have the place to yourselves.
Here, we’ve hand-picked some of our favorite boutique honeymoon hotels from around the world that offer intimate accommodations, luxurious experiences, and top-notch privacy for the two of you.
Best Overall: Monte-Carlo Beach, Monaco
This historic hotel is nestled a short distance away from Monaco’s iconic casino, and its seclusion is part of its charm.
Located on a quiet lagoon with a private beach and an outdoor, heated, saltwater swimming pool, this is the hotel for couples in search of some private Mediterranean lounge time.
There’s no need to worry about clamoring over lounge chairs at the pool, or rubbing shoulders with shoppers and tourists—with only 26 rooms and 14 suites, the two of you will most certainly be undisturbed throughout your stay.
Of course, Monaco’s world-famous Place du Casino is just a quick, complimentary 10-minute shuttle ride away—you can even walk if you like. That way, you can suit up for a glamorous Monegasque night on the town, before quickly retreating back to this coastal paradise for some rest and relaxation.

Best Tropical: Vista Celestial, Costa Rica
Vista Celestial is where the rainforest meets the sea. You'll feast your eyes on the unspoiled grandeur of this remote, boutique hotel located in the sleepy, relatively untouched southern region of Costa Rica.
There are only five haciendas for guests, so Visa Celestial promises all the romance and intimacy you’re looking for as newlyweds. Even though it’s location is relatively remote, don’t make the mistake of thinking this property skimps on luxury.
Each hacienda has a stunning, secluded, ocean-view terrace complete with jungle views and panoramas over the Pacific Ocean, as well as private hot tubs for long nights spent gazing up at tropical stars.
More adventurous twosomes can get their kicks with a range of activities organized by the hotel, including deep-sea fishing, kayaking, zip-lining, and jungle ATV tours.
Best European: Villa d’Este, Italy
When it comes to grand, over-the-top European luxury, nowhere does it better than this iconic, Lake Como hotel. Its 25-acre, imperial gardens and mosaic wall are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and every single guest room opens to views of Lake Como or the brilliant gardens.
Each dining venue offers al fresco seating, so you can soak up some Italian sunshine as you enjoy risotto topped with fresh fish from the lake. Go for a plunge in the hotel’s stunning, outdoor pool built above the waters of Lake Como, then enjoy a well-deserved nap on one of the jasmine-lined terraces.
It’s hard to go wrong with any of the rooms here—impossible, in fact—but we’d recommend checking into one of the property’s four private villas for one extra layer of seclusion. Before you end your getaway, make sure to ask for a guided tour of the hotel’s art collection, which includes numerous paintings, sculptures, and antiques collected throughout the centuries by the hotel’s long line of owners.
From start to finish, the staff at this famously meticulous hotel treat every guest like royalty. So, you're sure to feel like the king or queen you are, here.
Best Cozy: Bedford Post Inn, New York
Hollywood meets Westchester County at this stunning Hudson Valley property that lists Richard Gere among its co-owners.
With only eight rooms, it feels less like a hotel and more like your most fabulous, upstate friend’s home. Many of the rooms feature cozy, working fireplaces, as well as private sundecks to take in the tranquil sights and sounds of the surrounding woods.
The premises date back to 1860s, and every inch of the property has been lovingly restored to new glory. You’ll find it easy to unwind on the plush beds (outfitted with Frette linens), or through a roster of workshops at the Yoga Loft. There's also an endless list of nearby sightseeing options should you choose to step off-property.
And, despite being just over an hour’s drive north of Manhattan, this elegant retreat feels worlds away.
Best Luxury: Hotel Garzon, Uruguay
This remote Uruguayan village was once a prosperous railroad town, but fell into disrepair after the trains stopped passing through. It was reduced to all but a ghost town until Argentine celebrity chef Francis Mallman decided to build one of South America’s most exciting hotel-restaurant destinations.
An intimate property inspired by the region’s equestrian and agrarian history, it’s definitely on the no-frills side of luxury (there are no telephones in the guest rooms, which some might consider a blessing).
You’ll hardly encounter another soul while you’re in Garzon, but that’s part of the appeal. Imagine sleeping in every day, befriending the local horses on long daytime rides, and spending relaxed evenings enjoying some of the continent’s best cuisine.
While the all-inclusive rate might seem a little steep for a place that’s quite so remote, it includes meals at this award-winning, critically-acclaimed restaurant, where Mallman’s talents with grilled meats and curanto vegetables (baked underground) are on full display. This is one bucket-list journey we highly suggest making.
Best for Tequila Lovers: Casa Noble Tequila Villas, Mexico
Set on the estate of Casa Noble, a luxury small-batch tequila brand in Tequila Valley, Mexico, these superlative villas are surrounded by lush fields filled with agave plants.
It’s a rare privilege to enjoy a comfortable room just steps from where tequila is made, and you’ll be sure to pick up some education along the way—as well as tips for enjoying it.
Once you’ve taken the tour at Casa Noble, you can visit the nearby town of Tequila and the surrounding areas to check out other distilleries.
But wherever your tequila adventure takes you, you will enjoy coming home each night to the well-appointed, hacienda-style accommodations at this intimate property. Plus, you'll be far away from the tequila-guzzling crowds.
Best Design: La Résidence, South Africa
Our only complaint about this hotel is that it’s almost too beautiful.
Located in the charming town of Franschhoek, La Résidence is a stunning beacon of privacy and luxury, set among the undulating vineyards, plum orchards and mountain backdrops of South Africa’s Winelands. The scenery, the architecture, the vines, the interior design, and the service come together for an experience that is altogether overwhelming.
How many hotels have you stayed at that have regal resident peacocks roaming the grounds freely? It’s no surprise that the hotel attracts such luminous VIPs as Sir Elton John and a host of other celebrities for its under-the-radar luxury and privacy.
La Résidence is a sister property of Cape Town’s much-acclaimed The Silo, so we recommend coming here for some countryside respite, after you’ve explored The Mother City.
