When it comes to celebrity couples, some put their love on display for the world to see (we’re looking at you, Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox), but some keep theirs closer to the vest. Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling are one twosome that most definitely falls into the latter category—and for a good reason. As Eva explained to inquisitive fans via Instagram, their union and family is theirs and theirs alone. “As far as Ryan and I, it just works for us this way to stay private,” she wrote. “I have always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids. I’ll talk about them, of course, with limits, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life.”

Given their tight-lipped nature, there’s plenty of mystery surrounding their union, but we’ve managed to uncover all their biggest relationship milestones regardless. Keep reading for a complete timeline of Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes's relationship.

  • Ryan suggested Eva for the role of Romina, his fictional love interest in 2012's The Place Beyond the Pines.

Summer of 2011: Falling in Love

While it’s unclear exactly when the former Mouseketeer first laid eyes on his leading lady, the director of their shared film, The Place Beyond the Pines, revealed a clue in an interview with Moviefone. Apparently, Gosling was responsible for Eva’s involvement in the film. "I had asked Ryan about who he thought should be Romina… we thought about it a lot,” Derek Cianfrance said. “He had known Eva a little bit. He said, 'You should meet with Eva because she's great; I think she's got a lot to offer that maybe people haven't seen, which would be great.’ So I said 'okay.'”

Eva confirmed that they had been acquainted ahead of filming to Oprah Daily in 2019, saying, "we had known each other for a while already, so to work together was really exciting."
