We're still in the thick of engagement season, which is the time between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day when many couples decide to spend the rest of their lives together. To kick off 2023, Ella Henderson and Jack Burnell are celebrating their engagement. The “Ghost” singer announced on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 that her Great Britain olympic swimmer boyfriend popped the question during a couples’ getaway to Mauritius, an island in East Africa, and it all went down at The Residence Mauritius. “So this happened 💍🥲☺️… here’s to life with you & all its adventures @jackrexburnell ♥️,” her caption says.
The former X Factor star posted a carousel of photos to share the news. The post features two solo shots of the bride-to-be, exhibiting her new bling, which appears to be a three-stone diamond engagement ring with a cushion-cut center stone flanked by two pear-shaped side gems. The other two photos picture the couple looking comfortable in matching waffle robes. The lovebirds are all smiles in one and locking lips in the other. An idyllic background of sparkling waters, lush greenery, and sweeping palm trees frame the images.
Other celebrities and friends shared congratulatory messages in the comments section of the Instagram post. “Congratulations to you both ❤️,” Gordon Ramsay writes. Fellow British singer Louisa Johnson also expressed her excitement. “Awww❤️ congratulations ❤️,” she says. Another friend in the music industry, DJ Joel Corry, comments, “Woooo massive congrats to you both !!!”
Burnell also dedicated an Instagram post with a series of couple photos to announce their recent engagement. “SHE SAID YES!!! 💍,” the olympic athlete exclaims. “Can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you…❤️ @official_ellahenderson.” The swimmer began the carousel with a shot of his fiancée, showing off her sparkler on their Mauritius vacation. The next photo shows the duo taking a stroll along the beach, with Henderson in a black bikini and white cover-up and Burnell in a white button-up shirt and black shorts. The final image features Burnell jumping for joy next to the words “She said yes!” drawn in the sand.
According to Daily Mail, the two first met on a dating app during the pandemic and made it official in June of 2020. It was perfect timing for the singer since she had just gone through a difficult breakup and had also finished writing her second album, Everything I Didn’t Say—which she released in 2022. In March of 2022, the artist opened up to Metro about the fateful encounter. “It’s funny, we always say we never would have crossed paths probably if it wasn’t for the lockdown,” she told the outlet. “Finishing the album at that point was an amazing healing process for me as I’d split from my previous partner and just wanted to have some time to myself. I thought this is my time. I’m going to get stuck into the music again, and in my mind I was like, ‘That’s it. No more guys. I don’t need a distraction. My heart needs to heal.’ Meeting at that time was really cool because everything on the record was about owning up to mistakes, things falling apart, and me working on myself.”
Over the summer, the couple celebrated their two-year anniversary. “Two years with this amazing woman,” Burnell wrote on Instagram. “You are incredible not only for putting up with me but in everything you do. Can’t wait to make so many more special memories with you! @official_ellahenderson ❤️❤️❤️❤️.” Burnell posted the caption alongside a snapshot of the couple on a beach in Spain.
