SNL is to thank for yet another relationship—it seems the show really brings people together. ScarJo first met on the set of SNL back in 2006 when Scarlett was hosting for the first time and Colin had just become a writer on the show. Though they seemingly had made some good impressions on each other (more on that later), it wasn’t until her second hosting gig in 2017 that they finally hit it off.
The two tied the knot in Oct. 2020 with a very unexpected Instagram announcement. And we ship (or should we say Staten Island Ferry?) these two, so read on for a complete look back on this duo’s relationship timeline.
January 14, 2006: First Impressions
Scarlett hosted SNL for the first time, where she and Colin first met. She was a 20-year-old actress fresh off the premiere of her film Prestige, and Colin was 23 at the time and just landed a writing gig on SNL. In his memoir “A Very Punchable Face,” Colin recounts the first time they met. "She has just turned 20 and I was 23, but in terms of status and maturing she was here [holds hand above head] and I was here [holds hand one inch off ground].” He goes on to describe his first impression of her as "beautiful, smart, sweet and intimidatingly sophisticated."
November 13, 2010: Colin Writes a Sketch for Scarlett
Though Colin remembers their first meeting in 2006, Scarlett’s first impression is from four years later, when she returned to the show to host. Colin had written a funny and ridiculous “16 and Pregnant” sketch for Scarlett—a spoof of MTV’s predecessor Teen Mom. Colin writes in his memoir how she describes her first impression of him. “She claims that she remembers thinking I was 'cute,' but I know what I looked like and that's not the word I would have used. ('Shaggy' would have been generous. 'Slovenly,' more accurate)." In between her two SNL appearances, Scarlett had married actor Ryan Reynolds before divorcing in 2010.
March 2017: Scarlett Files for Divorce and Plays Ivanka Trump
Scarlett hosted SNL for the fifth time in March, just months after filing for divorce from her then-husband, journalist Romain Dauriac (with whom she shares six-year-old daughter Rose with). She famously played Ivanka Trump in a skit during the episode that she later reprised. Colin was also single at the time (he was linked to Rashida Jones in 2013), but Scarlett wasn’t looking for a relationship.
May 20, 2017: SNL Afterparty
Scarlett reappeared on the SNL Season 42 Finale hosted by Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson to make a cameo as Ivanka Trump again. Colin and Scarlett were spotted by multiple sources getting pretty cozy at the cast after-party. This part is when the rumors started swirling, but according to Life & Style SNL castmate Kate McKinnon had “set up” Colin and Scarlett on a date a few weeks prior to this episode.
June 2017: Spotted on Dates

Though they had yet to make things exclusive, the couple was spotted on a dinner date at The East Pole in NYC. Scarlett confused all of us when she was seen holding hands with her divorce attorney Kevin Yorn a couple of weeks after this date. We guess dating in the public eye can be a bit messy!
July 4, 2017: Holiday in the Hamptons
Just a month later, the two were spotted in the Hamptons celebrating the Fourth of July with Colin’s brother Casey and his sister-in-law Lisa. The couple was also celebrating their first birthday together, as Colin turned 35 on June 29.
November 2017: Meeting the Parents
Things started getting pretty serious when they met each other’s parents. A source told People that the two were in love. The couple then took their relationship public at a gala for the American Museum of Natural History.
December 2017: Back on SNL
Scarlett returned to SNL once again (she spends a lot of time there—now we know why!) to play Ivanka Trump once more. The cast went ice-skating at the Rockefeller rink, and SNL and Weekend Update costar Michael Che posted a blurry Instagram story of the two skating captioned "murrrrr xmas!!"

Almost a full year after sparking rumors, the two finally made their red carpet debut—which is Hollywood’s version of going Facebook official— at the premiere of Scarlett’s movie Avengers: Infinity War.

The stars showed up looking ultra glamorous for the prestigious event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Weeks before, Colin officially referred to her as his girlfriend during a bit on “Weekend Update” with castmate Kate McKinnon.

A source told Us Weekly that the couple had been living together and that Colin had grown close with Scarlett’s daughter Rose. The source added that the two were “in it for the long haul.”

Colin supported his girlfriend at her final Avengers movie premiere in Los Angeles. Scarlett was flawless in a custom Atelier Versace dress.
May 2019: She Said Yes!
Colin popped the question—and she said yes! Scarlett’s publicist confirmed that the pair was engaged in May. A couple months later at a Comic-Con event, Scarlett showed off her gorgeous pear-shaped rock, that People estimated to be 11-carats and worth $450,000.
December 2019: “The Love of My Life”

Scarlett was back at SNL for her sixth run at hosting. During her monologue she joked about Colin getting fired if the show didn’t go well. She closed the show out with another fiancé shout out. “I just want to say that this place means so much to me,” Johansson said. “I have so many friends here and I met the love of my life here. Merry Christmas!”

Colin and Scarlett made appearances at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards where Scarlett was nominated for her role in A Marriage Story.
October 2020: Colin and Scarlett Get Married
The two tied the knot in October and the news was shared via an Instagram post on the Meals on Wheels Instagram account. The post depicted the Staten Island Ferry with soup cans tied to the back with the words “Jost Married.” “We’re thrilled to break the news that Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost were married over the weekend in an intimate ceremony with their immediate family and loved ones, following safety precautions as directed by the CDC,” the caption read. “Their wedding wish is to help make a difference for vulnerable older adults during this difficult time by supporting @mealsonwheelsamerica. Please consider donating to celebrate the happy couple by clicking the link in our bio.”
October 31, 2020: Colin Sports His Wedding Band
Colin debuted his wedding ring during the October 31st Saturday Night Live episode with John Mulaney. During the Weekend Update segment, the co-host could be seen wearing his new simple gold wedding band just one week after he and Scarlett Johansson tied the knot in an intimate ceremony. Jost’s co-host, Che, even made a joke about the couple’s wedding in relation to the upcoming election. "I don't know what this world's gonna be after Tuesday. I may never see you again, Colin,” said Che. “I mean, we might both get drafted in the race wars. It's not fair, you just married Scarlett Johansson. And I just bought an electric bike, we're both doing equally great.”
July 2021: A Baby on the Way!
In early July, Page Six reported that the Black Widow actress was pregnant and the new baby would be arriving shortly. “Scarlett is actually due soon, I know she and Colin are thrilled,” a source told the publication.
Before the news broke, fans had been wondering why the actress missed some of the promotional events for Black Widow. Scarlett appeared virtually on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon in late June, but was only shot from the shoulders up.
“Scarlett is pregnant but has been keeping it very quiet,” a second source told Page Six. “She has been keeping a very low profile.”
August 2021: Welcoming Their First Child Together
The husband and wife duo officially confirmed that they welcomed their first baby together. Scarlett's rep Marcel Pariseau confirmed the exciting news to People on August 18.
Colin later stated on his Instagram, "Ok ok we had a baby. His name is Cosmo. We love him very much. Privacy would be greatly appreciated."
Johansson already shares daughter Rose Dorothy with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac.

February 13, 2022: Co-Starring in an Amazon Super Bowl Commercial
Scarlett and Colin teamed up to star as themselves in an Amazon Super Bowl commercial for Alexa. The two are shown in the living room when Colin says to Scarlett, "Hey babe, check this out." He says, "Alexa, it's game day." The space transforms into a relaxing oasis featuring dim lighting, drawn blinds, and chilled rosé bottles in a wine refrigerator. "It's like she can read your mind," the pair say in unison.
March 16, 2022: Timing Is Everything
In March 2022, Scarlett sat down with Drew Barrymore on her talk show. The two chatted about their acting roles, Drew's dating life, and the initial spark between Scarlett and Colin. Scarlett shared that she and Colin had known each other for a long time and when they finally got together, "the timing was just right."
