Things are starting to look up—it's a new year, vaccine rollout is underway, and (small) weddings are beginning to be safe again. And a new year always means new celebrity weddings.
Plenty of celebrities have decided to tie the knot in secret with small intimate ceremonies in 2021. From Kristen Wiig and Avi Rothman's secret nuptials to Nicolas Cage and Riko Shibata's romantic intimate Vegas wedding, celebs are leaning into the COVID-19 trend of minimonies and intimate ceremonies. And all the celeb weddings this year so far are making it quite apparent that we're not leaving micro weddings in 2020! So you heard it here first: Intimate weddings are still trendy!
Read on to see what celebrities have tied the knot in 2021—so far!
Kristen Wiig and Avi Rothman
During an appearance in February on Howard Stern's SiriusXM radio show, the comedian and actress revealed that she is a married woman! She told the radio host that she and Avi Rothman (the couple welcomed twins via surrogate last year) had secretly tied the knot.
“Besides the fact that we are where we are, it’s hard not to feel so much of the shit and struggle that’s going on,” she said. “In my home, I’m very lucky about having these two babies and my husband. And they make it all better—and it’s changed my life.”
She also referred to Rothman as her husband during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. While the details of their nuptials are unknown, one thing remains clear: Wiig is off the market!
Nicolas Cage and Riko Shibata
Nicolas Cage secretly wed his girlfriend Riko Shibata in an intimate Las Vegas wedding in February. The National Treasure star confirmed the marriage to Us Weekly, saying, “It’s true, and we are very happy." A rep also disclosed to the publication that the couple had a “very small and intimate wedding” at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, where they were joined by Cage's ex-wife Alice Kim and their son, Kal-El.
Riz Ahmed and Fatima Farheen Mirz
The Sound of Metal actor Riz Ahmed is taken! On an episode of the Grounded podcast, Ahmed referred to his wife, to which the host Louis Theroux asked how long he'd been married.
"Not very long, actually,” Ahmed said, according to Us Weekly. “It’s the first time I’ve ever mentioned it in an interview. So, congratulations on this incredibly exciting scoop.” The actor did not disclose his wife’s name, presumably for privacy reasons.
He later revealed who he married during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. He and author Fatima Farheen Mirz had a "super" intimate ceremony.
Erin Lim and Joshua Rhodes
The E! News correspondent has tied the knot! Lim and her fiancé Joshua Rhodes said "I do" in a beautiful and intimate ceremony in January—two months prior to her announcement.
"Oh ya so like," the TV personality wrote alongside a picture of her and Rhodes on their special day. The Rundown host told E! News that the intimate wedding was a family affair.
"We decided around the holiday that because of COVID we wanted to have a small, intimate wedding with just our family," she told E!. "We wanted to keep it small. And what better way to start out the New Year? We decided to get married in my parent's backyard. Joshua's dad actually married us, so it was really, really special."
