Sure, table numbers serve a (very important) functional purpose at any wedding, but that doesn’t mean they can’t also serve as a fun decor moment. There’s no shortage of ways to make your table numbers stand out.

One easy place to start? Consider the theme of your wedding, suggests Megan Estrada, CEO of NSWE Events. “If your wedding is in a countryside or barn, consider painting your table numbers onto something rustic, such as a cowbell or birch bark. Going tropical? Table numbers painted onto a monstera leaf will carry your theme in an elegant and eco-friendly way,” she says.

Here’s the other thing: Table numbers don’t have to be numbered, per se. You can also name tables after favorite songs, books, and even cities you’ve visited together. But, no matter which direction you go, remember that visibility is paramount. It’s very important that your guests can see and read the table numbers, notes Estrada.

What to Look for When Choosing Table Numbers

According to Estrada, your table numbers shouldn’t be so dramatic that they compete with the table decor; rather, the goal should be to find something that complements the tablescape without distracting from the centerpieces, she says.

“It won’t matter how pretty the table numbers are if they’re causing a traffic jam as people are having a hard time finding their tables and getting frustrated,” Estrada points out. “It’s important that guests can both see and read them.”

  • How many tables should I have?

“Most venues provide 60-inch or 72-inch round tables, which accommodate eight or 10 people comfortably,” Estrada says. This number is ideal for round tables, as it’s both physically comfortable and has enough people to talk to throughout the evening without it being chaotic, she says.

  • What is the best way for guests to find their table numbers?

Estrada says printing names and table numbers on individual escort cards makes it easier for guests to find their names, as opposed to having to scan through and find their info on one poster board. “By displaying the escort cards alphabetically in an easily accessible area that all guests will naturally pass by during the flow of the event, you ensure that guests won’t miss them. And by setting the tables in consecutive order in the room, guests should easily find their assigned table,” she explains.
