What to Look for in a Wedding Guest Dress
The dress code should always be the first consideration when choosing a wedding guest dress. “The invitation should indicate the dress code, and you should take that seriously when selecting your outfit,” says Nina Vargas, a celebrity business strategist, stylist, and content creator. “For example, if the invitation says ‘black tie,’ you should opt for a formal gown or a chic cocktail dress. If the invitation says ‘beach casual,’ you could wear a flowy sundress or a linen suit.” Grand Beauty Black Ruffled One-Shoulder Mermaid Maxi Dress is ideal for a black tie wedding while Bold New Look Tie-Back Midi Dress With Pockets fits right in at the beach. If you’re still stuck, Brides has put together an exhaustive wedding guest dress code explainer to help you out.
The season when the wedding will be taking place should also help you narrow down which outfit would be most appropriate—the guidelines here are pretty intuitive. “You should consider the weather and choose fabrics that are appropriate for the temperature,” says Vargas. “For example, you wouldn't want to wear a heavy wool dress to a summer wedding, but a light cotton or chiffon dress would be perfect. Similarly, you wouldn't want to wear a thin, breezy dress to a winter wedding, but a rich velvet or brocade dress would be ideal.”
While you can definitely use your discretion when picking a color for your wedding guest outfit, Vargas advises you stay away from white (as do we, unless you’ve been specifically asked to wear white), and instead opt for more subtle colors for discretion—think forest green or shades of blue, for example. We love how You're My Type Satin Jacquard Midi Slip Dress comes in six appropriate colors.
What shouldn’t I wear as a wedding guest?
Weddings should center around the newlyweds and the wedding party, so it’s best for considerate guests to follow a few guidelines. “You should avoid wearing white, as that color is traditionally reserved for the bride,” Vargas says. “You should also avoid wearing anything too flashy or revealing, as you don't want to upstage the wedding party. Instead, opt for subtle, elegant colors like navy, burgundy, or forest green.”
What accessories should I wear to a wedding?
While of course you can have a little fun with your wedding guest outfit, it’s still best to opt for relatively subtle accessories, so that you’re not attracting too much attention. “Keep it simple and elegant,” advises Vargas. “A pair of statement earrings, a delicate necklace, or a pretty clutch can add a touch of glam to your outfit without overpowering it. You should also consider the type of shoes you'll be wearing, as you'll likely be on your feet for several hours. Opt for comfortable, stylish shoes that you can dance in all night long.”
Can I wear the same dress to more than one wedding?
It depends. “It's generally not recommended to wear the same dress to more than one wedding,” says Vargas, who recommends you “try to mix and match different pieces to create new outfits for each wedding you attend.” With that in mind, while you want to look put together as a wedding guest, it is also less likely that people will remember your specific outfit from another event if the onus wasn’t on you (as in a wedding you didn’t have a role in), so you could totally rewear a dress if you feel comfortable doing so.
If you’re uneasy about it, try rewearing a dress to an event with a different guest list—for example one wedding where you will see your high school friends and one wedding where you will see your college friends. You could also mix it up by only rewearing a dress if the events are several months or years apart.
