One of the most exciting parts of wedding planning is designing your invitations. Not only is there a fun in customizing everything from font colors to envelope liners, but there’s also a thrill in knowing that the invites will likely be displayed on your guests’ fridges for months to come. And if the vibe of your wedding invitations matches the season you’re getting married in? That’s even better, as it gives your guests (and you!) a taste of what to expect from the big day down the line.

If you’re having a fall wedding, there are plenty of options for giving your fall wedding invitations an appropriately autumnal theme, from color palettes with burgundy, russet, and golden tones to lush botanical detailing.

It’s all about the color palette, says Kelli Teglas, a wedding and event planner based in Westchester, New York. While light pastels might be perfect for spring, “warmer colors and jewel tones” fit best with autumn celebrations, she notes—and not just for the invite itself, but in the envelope liners and enclosure cards, too. Additionally, keep an eye out for invites that feature watercolors or geometric shapes, two things that are particularly popular during the fall season, Teglas adds.

Whether you’re simply looking for some early ideas or are hoping to order your invites ASAP, we've rounded up some of our favorites.

What to look for in a fall wedding invitation

The color palette is key when selecting an autumn wedding invitation. Look for warm tones that reflect what's happening in nature during the season: golden yellow, persimmon orange, deep burgundy, and more. Also, think about where you're holding your wedding. If it's a spot that is more rustic and pastoral—think barns, forests and fields—let your wedding invitation reflect that.

FAQ
  • What are some other ways that I can incorporate fall Into my wedding?

First and foremost: get married outdoors, as long as the weather allows. At outdoor fall weddings, Teglas says, “couples are just meshing with the nature and the beauty of what we have around us.” That means vibrant leaves, lush foliage, and natural elements.

You can also easily add those gorgeous fall colors into the decor of the wedding, Teglas adds, such as by including gold napkins or red florals, or even by wearing a flower crown made with vivid, seasonal blooms.

  • What else can I do to give my wedding invitations a special touch?

One popular option, Teglas notes, is using the invite “as the start of your theme, and carrying that through to the wedding.” If you went heavy on jewel tones, for instance, incorporate those colors into other aspects of your event, such as the linens or tableware. “When you go an extra step and keep everything blended, it’s just so nice,” says Teglas, noting how a unified color scheme can make detail photos of the invitation on your wedding day especially lovely.

Another idea includes using your invites to walk guests through the journey of your relationship, through watercolor drawings or personalized maps. “It does take time, but it's always beautiful when you get story of the couple in the invitation and not just their names and info,” says Teglas.
