Brides / Amelia Manley

From engagement to honeymoon, there are countless events that a bride can get excited for on her pre-wedding journey. But, as any seasoned bride-to-be will confess, outfitting yourself for five to 10 events with the sentiment that “it’s my wedding, I’ll party as much as I want to!” can be a challenge—both stylistically and financially. Enter, clothing rental services.

Rather than purchase an entirely new wardrobe, clothing rental services allow brides to loan a celebratory dress, jumpsuit, skirt set, and more, for a fraction of the item’s retail price. Doing so can help a bride to feel confident on every occasion, while also maximizing the wedding budget.

The best clothing rental services have a deep bench of designers, a robust range of categories, flexible memberships/one-time rental options, an inclusive range of sizes, and top-notch customer service. We tested countless clothing rental services to bring you a definitive list of time- and money-saving options for your road to “best-dressed bride.”

The Best Clothing Rental Services of 2022

Best Overall: Rent the Runway

Rent the Runway

 Rent the Runway

Why We Chose It: The O.G. of clothing rental services, Rent the Runway delivers a premium experience to fashion-conscious brides who aim to look on-point from engagement to honeymoon and everything in-between.

  • Extensive list of designers to suit every style
  • Wide range of categories, including jewelry, accessories, activewear, loungewear, home goods, and ski gear
  • Highly customized membership programs
  • Perks like a free backup size, prepaid returns, and steep retail discounts
  • Helpful community reviews

  • Limited availability for popular or newer styles
  • Longer RTR Reserve rentals can get pricey

Rent the Runway (RTR) has become the gold standard for clothing rental services—and with good reason. It has incredible breadth and depth of fashion-forward styles from designers like Alexis, Rosie Assoulin, Jonathan Simkhai, and Reformation. It also has the most extensive categories of any service we found. We’re talking jewelry, accessories, activewear, loungewear, home goods, ski attire, and even kids’ clothing.

RTR offers two ways to rent: RTR Reserve and monthly memberships. Reserve customers can choose four- or eight-day rentals, with an average cost of about $30 for a dress. Simply select the date you’d like your item to arrive (at least one day before the event), pick your size, opt-in/out for a complimentary backup size, and add standard (around $10), Next-Day (roughly $35), or Saturday (about $35) delivery. (Manhattanites get same-day and Saturday delivery for about $10.)

If the item isn’t a winner, there’s the option to replace the outfit entirely for the cost of overnight shipping. And returns are always prepaid and free.

Monthly memberships are equally flexible. They range from roughly $94 per month for four items at a time to about $235 for 16 items. Members receive their pieces in one to four shipments per month (with the ability to modify frequency or the number of items at any time), thus keeping your closet feeling constantly refreshed. Fall in love with a style? Members can also purchase at a steep retail discount.

Another feature that sets RTR apart: extensive community reviews, which allow brides to preview a style on peers and in a range of body shapes and sizes.

Best Budget: Nuuly

Why We Chose It: Fashion- and budget-conscious brides will find a home-run in Nuuly, which serves as an extension of both your event and everyday wardrobes.

  • More than 6,000 styles, with hundreds of new ones added per month
  • Wide range of sizes, from 00 to 40W, plus petite and maternity
  • Great value
  • Ability to add two extra items per month for a surcharge

  • Must return (or purchase) all six items at the end of the month
  • No upgraded shipping option
  • No-frills packaging

Brought to you by the folks behind URBN, Anthropologie, and Free People, Nuuly lets brides rent six styles for 30 days for about $88 per month, making it by far the best value. While the service isn’t focused specifically on weddings, Nuuly will be launching a small capsule collection for casual or last-minute brides later this spring.

To use the site, browse and save styles in your virtual closet. At the beginning of each month, six of those pre-selected items are moved into your Nuuly queue (based on availability) and shipped to your doorstep. Rentals are always six items at a time, with the option to add two bonus items at roughly $18 per piece.

Once your order is placed, you can expect up to two business days for processing and three business days for delivery. Shipping is standard (no option to upgrade the speed), but Nuuly often beats their own delivery guarantee: An order we placed on Monday morning arrived mid-day Wednesday.

A few days before the end of the month, pack your items and drop them off or schedule a pick-up with UPS. Your next Nuuly is automatically sent at the next billing cycle. If at any point you see a style you love and want to snag it, there’s the option to return your current Nuuly and unlock the next one early (at which point you’re charged next month’s fee of about $88).

The six items we rented arrived rolled in a reusable garment bag that doubles as a shipping container (think: soft-sided "garment cooler"). While we appreciate the brand’s sustainability ethos (the intent is to cut down on plastic waste), we do wish our items had been packaged a little more thoughtfully.

Best for Designer Clothes: Janet Mandell

Janet Mandell

Janet Mandell

Why We Chose It: Chanel, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent—Janet Mandell is more than just a clothing rental service; it’s a high-fashion mecca.

  • An unmatched luxury designer inventory
  • Personal styling services
  • Automatic 7-day rental
  • 24-hour return window for online rentals

  • Only one of each item, which may lead to availability issues
  • Limited sizing

Imagine you’re an A-list celeb, popping into your high-powered stylist’s studio to browse endless racks of designer clothing, shoes, and accessories for an upcoming event. That’s the experience that Janet Mandell delivers to brides everywhere with her growing collection of 500-plus luxury goods.

With eponymous showrooms in Chicago and Los Angeles, Janet Mandell offers phone or video conference with a seasoned personal stylist for everyone.

From a Balmain blazer mini (bachelorette vibes) to a Dolce & Gabbana floral midi (hello, post-wedding brunch), Janet Mandell has fun, flirty styles in spades. While the overall inventory ranges from sizes 00 to 16, each piece is singular (meaning just one item, in only one size), so the experience can be limiting, especially for plus-size shoppers.

We love that each rental is automatically seven days long and that brides can request to extend (ideal for destination weddings) by contacting the helpful customer service team. Another great perk: Brides who order online have a 24-hour grace period from the moment the item arrives to try it on and return it for a full refund if it doesn’t fit or just isn’t "the one."

Prices range from about $250 to $400 per garment, with vintage and one-of-a-kind pieces costing roughly $500 and up. Customers pay for outbound shipping (UPS Ground), with the option to upgrade to 2nd Day or Next Day for an added surcharge. Prepaid UPS return labels are included with every rental.

Best for Bridal Showers: Rebecca Taylor RNTD

Rebecca Taylor RNTD

Rebecca Taylor RNTD

Why We Chose It: RNTD features a robust assortment of wedding-worthy styles from Rebecca Taylor that bridge the gap between engagement and wedding.

  • Romantic dresses in spades
  • Unlimited exchanges
  • Great value
  • Option to buy styles you’ve rented and love at a discount
  • Free shipping both ways

  • Can’t choose which specific styles you receive

Beloved for its effortlessly stylish, endlessly romantic aesthetic, Rebecca Taylor is the rock upon which bridal wardrobes are built. Now, brides have the option to tap the brand’s extensive archive and weekly drop of new styles for a flat fee of about $159 per month for four items at a time.

Users simply sign up for the program, fill their virtual closet with a minimum of 10 faves (sizes range from 00 to 16), and then wait excitedly to receive their first box. On average, orders are processed within two to three days and arrive via USPS Priority Mail in one to four business days.

Exchanges are unlimited, so as soon as you’ve rocked those four styles, simply “return notify,” and your next box will be prepared before you’ve even sent the current one back via the free prepaid label. While you can’t choose which specific items are included in a box (it’s based on availability), RNTD users can prioritize favorites in their closet. However, between the breezy floral dresses, delicate silk blouses, and tailored skirt sets—guaranteed to take you from engagement to honeymoon without skipping a beat—your virtual closet will likely be overflowing with options.

Fall in love with that cream-colored V-neck embroidered wrap dress from your bridal shower? Utilize the “Try to Buy” option, which gives you the ability to purchase rental items you can’t bear to part with.

Best for Plus Size: Gwynnie Bee

Gwynnie Bee

Gwynnie Bee

Why We Chose It: From everyday casual to flirty formal, Gwynnie Bee is a monthly box subscription with the greatest range of styles for plus-size shoppers.

  • Inclusive sizing
  • Free, 30-day trial for new customers
  • Complimentary shipping both ways
  • Can choose the specific items you receive, for a nominal fee

  • Limited cocktail-appropriate styles

Founded in 2011, Gwynnie Bee is a monthly clothing subscription box with inclusivity in mind. Casual to semi-formal sizes range from 0 to 32, making it especially ideal for plus-size brides.

Customers can choose from rental programs that range from one item at a time for roughly $49 per month to 10 items at a time for about $199 per month. All plans include unlimited exchanges, USPS priority shipping both ways, and cleaning. Gwynnie Bee also offers 50 perecnt off your first month, so you can test out the service and see if it’s a fit for your wedding style.

Users are required to keep a minimum number of items in their virtual closet (tiered, based on the number of items in your subscription) to ensure that they always receive pre-selected styles. While you typically can’t choose the specific items in a box, Gwynnie Bee offers the flexibility of Dart service. This allows you to select and expedite items from your closet for your next box, which ships within one business day and costs around $5 per shipment.

Since the service isn’t designed specifically for brides, don’t expect a plethora of white cocktail dresses. We recommend using Gwynnie Bee to add something special for your engagement photos, bridal luncheon, or casual celebratory gatherings.

Best for Wedding Party Rentals: Tulerie

Why We Chose It: The Tulerie app is to the wardrobe what Airbnb is to the homestay: a game-changing service centered on peer-to-peer clothing rentals.

  • Community atmosphere that’s akin to borrowing from a friend
  • Fun, flirty styles from contemporary and luxury brands
  • Strict quality control
  • Helpful reviews

  • Each listing is for one item, meaning limited sizing
  • Waitlist to gain access to the platform

Think of Tulerie as raiding your most stylish friend’s closet—if your friend had 2,700-plus items of drool-worthy clothing. Users will find trendy and timeless styles from brands like Chanel, Zimmerman, Saloni, Johanna Ortiz, and Agua by Agua Bendita.

To get started, first, you sign up on the app. Then, schedule a quick FaceTime interview with the Tulerie team and await access to start borrowing dresses, jumpsuits, skirts, tops, handbags, shoes, and more.

“Lenders” loan out their own garments to “Borrowers” for a period of four, 10, or 20 days. Every item has to meet Tulerie quality standards and is dry-cleaned by the Lender between rentals. Since each piece is pre-owned, you won’t find a range of sizes per garment (like at a department store), but you can filter by size and style to narrow the search.

Tulerie’s personalized rental experience is perfect for brides who want their bridesmaids outfitted in perfectly mismatched styles, since each gal can hand-select her own similar yet singular piece.

The service offers a suggested rental price for each item, based on its condition and original retail price, but the final rental cost is ultimately decided by the Lender. Tulerie does not include pricing information on its website.  It does claim roundtrip shipping fees are built into the price.

Rentals can be secured as far in advance as four months directly on the listing, but brides who prefer to lock down a "must-have" further out can email customer service or chat directly with the owner via the app’s messaging platform.

Best for Grooms: The Black Tux

The Black Tux

The Black Tux

Why We Chose It: Sophisticated, quality styles from the Black Tux ensure your groom (and groomsmen) look like Dapper Dans for the big day.

  • Extensive range of casual to formal suits/tuxedos
  • Free, at-home try-on
  • Generous rental window
  • Alterations on rental garments permitted

  • For an off-the-rack experience, literally nothing

Not to be confused with bad polyester rentals from 1980s prom flicks, the Black Tux is an elevated service for the modern, style-conscious man. Designed specifically with weddings in mind, the Black Tux has more than 50 suit styles, plus dress shirts, neckwear, shoes, and accessories.

If your groom isn’t sure where to start, steer him toward the Peak Lapel Tuxedo—a classic black tuxedo never goes out of style. For more casual or outdoor weddings, seek out a tried-and-true blue suit or a trendy-but-still-neutral light grey suit.

Still undecided? Guys can also visit in-person showrooms and outposts at select Nordstrom stores.

Write this down so your groom doesn’t claim he “wasn’t told when to order”: Rentals should be placed at least 21 days in advance and automatically arrive ten days before the event. This allows time for minor alterations to the jacket and/or pants at your local tailor or to request an alternate size within 48 hours. After the wedding, return via prepaid label within three days.

Black Tux does not include detailed pricing information on its website. It offers a $200 credit for the groom's rental or purchase when six or more looks for the wedding party for at least $175 are reserved.

Final Verdict

Whether you’re looking for special something for a specific event or want a constant wardrobe refresh on your “road to wed,” clothing rental services have something to offer every bride.

Some companies focus on one-time rentals, which range from short-term to longer windows, often with the option to extend for a fee. This is great for brides (and grooms) who are eyeing a specific style for the engagement party, pre-wedding photoshoot, bachelorette party, bridal shower, or rehearsal dinner.

Other clothing rental services offer monthly memberships for a fixed number of items per month. This can be a fantastic choice for brides who prefer to have a range of options on hand for upcoming events or who want to frequently rotate styles on their pre-wedding journey. Many services provide the flexibility to add bonus items for a small fee, which may be worthwhile when looking to beef up your wardrobe around the big day.

Of all the services, Rent the Runway stood out for its wide-ranging inventory, flexible one-time rentals, customizable membership programs, user-friendly experience, top-notch customer service, and overall value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do Clothing Rental Services Work?

Clothing rental services provide temporary access to popular fashion brands at a fraction of the retail price. Brides can browse a vast selection of clothing, accessories, jewelry, and more to find the styles that best match their personal style. Depending on the service, brides add pieces to their event wardrobe via short-term rental, month-long loan, or unlimited rental.

Most clothing rental services allow you to pause or cancel your monthly membership at any time, so it’s easy to tailor the experience to your pre-wedding journey. When you’ve got a lull in your social calendar after, say, the engagement party, hit pause on your membership. Then, as the big day draws near, resume the program or upgrade to a multi-item plan to lock down that rehearsal dinner, honeymoon number, and more.

How Do I Choose the Best Clothing Rental Service?

Choosing the right clothing rental service may hinge on which one has the brands that most appeal to your personal style. The first step is to browse each service’s online collection and decide if it’s a fit before committing to a one-time rental or monthly subscription plan.

How Much Does It Cost to Use a Clothing Rental Service?

The cost of a clothing rental service ranges anywhere from about $23 to more than roughly $500 for a dress. It can also cost around $88 to $200 per month for a multi-item monthly membership.

How We Chose the Best Clothing Rental Services

We researched numerous clothing rental services in order to establish a definitive list that caters to the specific needs of a bride. We personally tested each one to ensure that they deliver on user experience, expected delivery windows, clothing availability, quality assurance, and more. We also tried to incorporate brands at a variety of price points and size ranges for overall inclusivity.
