Shopping for a mother of the bride dress is an exciting moment. But, if you’re looking for a gown in a specific color like champagne, the process can be a bit daunting. A mother of the bride dress should make a statement, but it also needs to blend in enough to support (and not overwhelm) the bride's overall look.
This is where the color palette steps in. “Even if the mother of the bride goes for a simple dress, she can take it up a notch by wearing a beautiful, luxurious color that compliments her skin and hair,” says Michael Cho, the head designer at Amsale. With its soft mix of peachy-pink and gold, champagne is a warming color that plays up natural skin tones. It's a nice complement to white and cream, as well as other accent colors, so it works especially well with a bridal theme.

What to Look for in Mother of the Bride Dresses
“Color is really important here because you don’t want to look like an extension of the bridal party, but you need a color that both compliments and makes a statement," says Cho. That's why champagne is a good choice, because it's different from white, but it's still neutral and elegant. "Depending on the undertone, fabric, and matte or sheen texture, champagne can elevate or accent almost any wedding palette,” he adds.
“The mother’s authentic style is really important,” says Cho. “When we wear a dress that truly speaks to our personal style and reflects who we are, people notice. You’ll get endless compliments no matter how simple or extravagant the style. You'll feel confident.”
Think about your personal style. Do you prefer wearing sleek silhouettes and fabrics? Or do you prefer something super glam and over the top? There's no right or wrong answer—it's about what really speaks to you.
“The fabric and fit of the dress is equally as important as the style and color,” says Cho. “Look for fabrics that will work with the wedding location and weather.” For example, loose, bohemian shapes and breathable, silky fabrics are ideal for beach weddings. For a winter wedding, you may want to opt for something with more coverage, warmth and sparkle.
What is the color champagne?
“Champagne is a soft, neutral hue that blends beige and cream together," says Cho. He notes that champagne is an understated color that's also great for wedding decor, since it goes with just about anything.
What colors go with a champagne dress?
Since champagne is such a versatile tone, it goes with many other colors. “The most important factor when choosing complimentary colors is to pay attention to the fabric and tones of the champagne dress,” says Cho. “For example, if the dress comes in a fluid satin fabric, it will likely have a cool, silver sheen to it, which is best paired with silver accents and jewelry.” If your dress has a golden undertone, pair it with items that are similarly warm-toned.
How do you accessorize a champagne-colored dress?
“You can accessorize champagne with gold or silver jewelry and shoes, depending on the undertone,” says Cho. Gemstones like sapphire blue, amethyst, gold and rose gold also go well with champagne.
