What to Look for in Anniversary Jewelry
At the root of it, anniversary jewelry should be something that fits your partner’s style and has meaning. Meaning can come in many forms—think sentimental personalization or incorporating your spouse’s favorite stone.
For a personal touch, consider customization with a monogrammed nameplate necklace or adding charms to a bracelet or necklace with the initials of your family members. If outward sentimentality is not your style, have a special love note or date inscribed inside a ring, bangle or locket to acknowledge your anniversary.
Personalization doesn’t have to just come in the form of words. For example, a pair of earrings with their favorite gemstone, a stone that represents the month you got married, or a special token from a trip can offer meaning that's unique to your relationship.“Outside of it being a classic, every day piece, I think a lot of people want a story behind their piece,” says consultant Megan Crabtree.
In addition to personal taste, keep an eye on the details of your jewelry listings when choosing your anniversary gift. If your partner only wears 14K yellow gold, make sure the pieces you’re looking at are available in 14K yellow gold. For the spouse that only wears dainty jewelry, you might consider a low total carat weight bracelet or pair of studs like VRAI Solitaire Stud instead of a flashy tennis bracelet. If you typically see your loved one only wearing an occasional jewelry piece for a fancy date night out, look for a piece that makes a statement while still looking natural, like James Bezel, Lab-Grown White Sapphire Silver Riviere Necklace.
"Start your search for the perfect anniversary gift early (3-6 months beforehand) so you have time to make any adjustments or sizing needs," says jewelry expert Adrianne Sanogo. She adds that if you're planning a surprise, ask questions about your spouse's favorite colors and styles, as well as their opinions on pieces that other people are wearing.
What jewelry is most suitable for wedding anniversary gifts?
While there’s no one specific style of jewelry that universally symbolizes an anniversary (the way a diamond ring represents an engagement), there are a few pieces our experts say withstand the test of time.
“Over the past few years, especially during COVID, we’ve seen a significant demand and increase in the sales of diamond studs because they’re something classic and simple that you can wear every day and can pass down generations,” says Crabtree. In the past few years, lab-grown diamonds have risen in popularity due to their sustainable and ethical practices.
“Another classic we see outside of diamond studs is an eternity band," adds Crabtree. "There's a story behind it—especially when you tie it to a marriage—and much like studs you can wear them every day." They also come in a range of sizes and price ranges for every budget.
If diamonds aren’t your partner's thing, that doesn’t mean your jewelry gift won’t have an anniversary feel to it. The most important thing is that it's something thoughtful your partner actually likes and will want to wear.
“I'm seeing more and more colored gems being used alone in a nniversary rings, and colored gemstones alongside diamonds,” explains Sanogo. She adds that the Toi et Moi (French for" You and Me") style ring dating from the 1700s, is making a strong comeback thanks to several celebrities sharing images on social media. "For this nostalgic style, couples are using birthstones, different shaped diamonds, or a combo of a diamond and a colored gem to show their love.”
How much should you spend on an anniversary gift?
Gone are the days of saving three months’ salary for an engagement ring, and our experts agree that any rules about how much to spend on anniversary jewelry have gone with them. There's no "should" when it comes to a suggested price tag for your anniversary gift. Instead, it's about setting an appropriate budget that's in line with your personal finances.
"If you want to plan for it and perhaps make a bigger than usual splash, start a monthly dedicated savings goal for an entire year, and don’t touch that money," says Sanogo. There are also many brands creating affordable jewelry. We adore Catbird’s Threadbare Ring, which you can add to for every anniversary for a symbolic touch.
Can you give jewelry for any anniversary year?
While traditions around anniversary gifts are deeply rooted in assigning certain items or stones to how many years you’ve been married, that doesn’t always leave room for giving based on your partner’s likes and tastes. For example, if you know your partner would rather receive a piece of jewelry than a set of wine glasses for the third anniversary, by all means, buy them jewelry.
An anniversary piece should be something that feels unique. Maybe you’re purchasing a custom piece of jewelry for a milestone anniversary (think five, 10, 25, 50, etc.) or choosing a more affordable piece to give on the years in between.
Giving jewelry as an anniversary gift should come from the heart. It’s not about just buying any pretty piece to check buying a present off the list, it’s about showing your love and celebrating the time you’ve spent together with something meaningful. Make sure to plan in advance and think about what your partner truly likes and would actually wear.
