Alex Trebek’s wife Jean Trebek is remembering her late husband in a recent post on her Instagram.
Jean thanked fans for their ongoing support alongside a photo from the couple’s 1990 wedding. She wrote, “My family and I sincerely thank you all for your compassionate messages and generosity. Your expressions have truly touched our hearts. Thank you so very, very much. Many Blessings to all, Jean Trebek”
The photo captured the sweet moment when the Jeopardy host, wearing a white tux and black bowtie, slid a ring onto Jean’s finger at their wedding.
Trebek sadly passed away on Nov. 8 at 80-years-old after his battle with stage-four pancreatic cancer. In honor of the late game show host, we’re reflecting on the couple’s love story and their beautiful wedding.
How They Met
The two met at a party in New York City in 1988, and Jean told People that she was a bundle of nerves. “I was afraid I’d mispronounce my own name! But Alex is really down to earth,” she said. “He’s much more casual than he is on the show.” They instantly hit it off, and Trebek later invited her over to his home for their first dinner-date.
Trebek’s memoir titled “The Answer Is...The Reflections On My Life,” which came out this summer, revealed that he knew immediately that Jean was meant for him. "Sometimes you look at something, you look at someone, and you know,” he wrote. “I mean, you’ve heard stories of people who meet and decide within half an hour; I knew this was going to be the person I’d end up with."
On Jean’s 26th birthday in 1989, Trebek gave her some pants and a jacket as her present. But then he told her there was another portion of the present, and he pulled out a box. He proposed with a 16-carat sapphire ring. Jean told People she was blown away by the ring and the proposal. “I went all dumb. I think I said, ‘What?’”
The couple wed in 1990 at L.A.’s Regency Club in front of 150 friends and family members. According to People, Trebek even used Jeopardy rhetoric to seal the deal, saying “The answer is… yes.”
As seen in the photo she shared to Instagram, Jean wore a white gown with a high neck, puffy sleeves and embossed floral details. She kept the accessories simple with diamond stud earrings and a white veil with her hair in a low bun.
Their Love Story
The two celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in April, but Trebek told People in January that he wished he had spent more years with Jean.
“...and I was thinking about President Bush when he died, and all the comments about his life about what a nice guy he is, and how he and his wife had been together 73 years,” he said. “I thought, oh my gosh … if I’d just met Jean in my 20s we could have had a longer life together. I guess if I’d met her when I was in my 20s she wouldn’t have been born yet,” he joked. “But hey, 29 years is pretty good!"
Trebek recently referred to Jean as “his rock” during his cancer battle. "She's kept me alive," he told People in July. "If it weren’t for Jean, I’d have put myself out of this a long time ago."
They also had two children together, Emily, 27, and Matthew, 29.
Sending all of our love to Jean and their children!
