"I looked to the 1930s for inspiration," says Gloria. "I've always been fascinated by the glamour of that era." Her blush-colored, beaded, Chantilly lace corset by Monique Lhuillier from the Bridal Galleria was paired with a duchesse satin skirt she designed herself, while Tani purchased a Hugo Boss suit. Her bouquet included one of her favorite Asian flowers—peonies—along with roses. All flowers by Briar Rose.
The bridesmaids' dropped-waist silk dresses with fluted hems, also designed by the bride, were accented with long strands of pearls and leopard-print heels. As Gloria says, "It was all very reminiscent of the '30s."
For the ceremony aisle, Gloria and her florist recreated the look of lanterns floating on the Kyoto River by screenprinting the cherry blossom motif onto washi paper, then wrapping it around glass containers that held floating candles. The ceremony was officiated by one of Tani's best friends.
Guests wrote their wishes for the couple on blush-colored notecards, and hung them from the branches of this "guest book" tree.
Tani's nephews Jordan and Matthew were the ringbearers—in After Hours suits and Converse sneakers.
The Julia Morgan Ballroom was enhanced by votives and rose uplighting by Elle Music. The 35 tables held one of three different centerpiece designs that included peonies, mock orange flowers and branches. Champagne-colored linens from Classic Party Rentals and chairs from A-ABCO.
An array of pastries, including these madeleines, was shipped overnight from France.
The almond custard and raspberry cake, created by Schubert's Bakery in San Francisco, paid tribute to Gloria's other favorite flower, cherry blossoms, a motif that also appeared on the invitations, favor boxes and ceremony candles.
Favor boxes, made and assembled by Gloria and Tani, contained cookies frosted with images of dragons and rabbits (their respective Chinese zodiac years). Cookies by Custom Cookies.
