Updated Roses

Red roses are timeless, but can look a little plain-Jane if they’re the only bloom in your bridal bouquet. San Francisco floral designer Natalie Bowen, 415-948-6035, nataliebowendesigns.com, suggests adding texture through the use of unusual flowers and foliage. For this particular bouquet, Bowen used curvy black hybrid calla lilies and smoke bush to make the roses look more fiery, graphic and cosmopolitan. "The wedding was held on Halloween day at the Limn Gallery in SoMa, where they were having an art exhibit that featured lots of red, brilliant graphic prints," says Bowen. She wanted to play off the art and tie in the Halloween theme—without going the orange-pumpkin route. "I thought the black elements were an edgy way to do that, while still keeping the bouquet looking somewhat traditional." Cost: about $150.
