Chicago Ideas We Love: Fall 2006

Flower of the Moment

It may not be as sexy as an orchid, or as classic as a pink peony, but we’ve been hearing a lot about the wonders of humble scabiosa. Floral designers frequently use it in pod form—a little "ball" of itty-bitty blossoms—to create textural contrast in bouquets and arrangements. They also have a subtle, wildfloweresque quality, perfect for toning down the formality of a bouquet composed of "black-tie" blooms like roses and calla lilies. We love the way the way the color looks with a dark brown suit, and with formal, but not too formal, navy. "Scabiosa comes in lots of different colors, so it’s very versatile," says floral designer Kelly Marie Uss of Fleur, 773-395-2770, fleurchicago.com. Uss used little scabiosa clusters, as well as locally grown kale and kiwi vine, to make this bouquet look more natural. "There’s a mini star shape in the center of each blossom, which makes it so pretty and appealing," says Uss. Another plus: It’s inexpensive.
