What to avoid

Micro-managing the music

The best DJs and bands don't start a party with a set-in-stone list of songs in mind. Instead, they read the crowd and use their talents to keep the party moving. If you come up with an overly detailed list of what to play you may be killing your own celebration, so trust the entertainers to do their thing.

Hiring a pal
Sure, your best friend's little brother may be a cheaper DJ than the pros you interviewed, but odds are you aren't doing yourself any favors if you hire him. A wedding has a specific timeline and set of circumstances, for example, knowing when to play the father-daughter dance, and checking that all the family members are around beforehand?

A no-request policy
Some couples don't want the entertainers to take requests for fear that the mood will be too controlled by specific guests. But taking a few requests will make the party more fun, and also indicates to the band or DJ what the crowd really wants to hear. Ask your entertainers to be good-natured about requests, and to use their own judgment.
