Quick, small portions offer lots of choices with this new menu style

A small-plates trend started this year, according to Carla Ruben of Creative Edge Parties, NYC. Couples are choosing seven, eight or even nine dishes to be served in quick succession in appetizer-like portions (typically three or four bites each). The most popular small plates include cured rib-eye on bruschetta, grilled lemon-coriander shrimp with white-bean aioli, and paella cake with red-pepper sauce. "Light portions of interesting food continuously arriving at the table encourages conversation, and creates more of a party feel than a formal sit-down dinner or buffet could," says Ruben.
