Real Bride: The icing tastes just like a (better version of an) Oreo and I love the big chunks of cookie throughout. The cake itself is very fun and playful and will bring out the inner child in you and your guests—but maybe a little too youthful for my wedding.


Flavor: Red Velvet Red velvet has become a very popular cake flavor, especially in cities that have a huge cupcake bakery contingent like New York and L.A. And it's always been a favorite in the South. It's definitely an unconventional, unexpected choice for a wedding cake, and is the kind of wedding detail that will get a "wow" reaction from dads, uncles and grandfathers (on whom the beauty of the flowers or table settings is usually lost). And your hipster friends will high-five your choice because they likely will have tried red velvet in cupcake form (late at night, I'm guessing?) and will be excited to eat a giant slice of it. I like red velvet for winter weddings...the red-and-white combo looks like a wintry holiday treat and in my opinion, would be way too heavy for a summertime event (mostly because of the thick, cream cheese frosting). Red velvet has become very popular or even trendy in the last few years so it could probably work with any meal though the obvious choices would be a Southern or a Classic American menu. This is a very dense cake so I would be careful serving it after anything too heavy or filling. Although the inside is red, the outside is white so Red Velvet could look like any traditional white wedding cake. Again, I would worry a bit because (though it seems crazy to me) some people don’t like red velvet or cream cheese frosting.

Real Bride: I think this cake would be perfect for wintertime, Valentine’s Day, or even a summer wedding in the South. My wedding is very icy and cool, in creams, silvers and blues, however, so it’s not quite right.
