Sarah Magid's Eco-Chic Wedding Cakes

This beloved organic baker has a new cookbook showcasing her stunning creations

Sarah Magid is a talented organic baker who pays as much attention to the way a cake looks and tastes as she does to the ingredients inside. Her New York City based custom cake business creates beautiful cakes, cupcakes, and even "reformed junk food" treats that take their inspiration from Oreos and Twinkies.

Now, with her new cookbook, "Organic and Chic," even brides who don't live near the Big Apple can enjoy a taste of Sarah's sweet, organic magic at their bridal shower or wedding reception. If you're trying to save money and are planning a small, intimate wedding, consider baking one of Sarah's cakes (or cupcakes!) for your reception.

Her straightforward and easy-to-follow recipes include decorating instructions, baking tips, ingredient suggestions and recommended tools to help you create a wedding cake that actually looks like a wedding cake. Another idea, if you're planning a larger wedding, is to make one of Sarah's cakes for the cake-cutting, and then make a variety of her other desserts (Twinkies or Sno Balls, anyone?) to serve your guests.

Remember, keep it simple. Enlist a creative friend to help you if you don't feel comfortable baking and decorating on your own. Carefully read Sarah's chapter on decorating and consider choosing one of the easier designs and practicing ahead of time. Sarah also says that dusting or painting your cake with metallic powder is a great way to get a big impact with a small amount of effort.

If you'd rather leave the baking to a professional, Sarah will send you a decorating kit specific to the dimensions of your cake and your vision with hand-sculpted, sugar-paste flowers and piped decorations. She'll also include a detailed drawing explaining how your local baker should put her decorations on his frosted cake.
