Katie and TJ were instantly inspired when they first considered Marco Island, FL, as the location for their October 2006 wedding. Not only did the island—conveniently situated just west of Katie's parents' home, in Naples—provide the sunny vacation atmosphere the Detroit couple desired, but the Marco Island Yacht Club also offered a picturesque backdrop they couldn't help but fall in love with for their reception. "The views of the marina at sunset are especially gorgeous," says the bride, who was charmed by the club's nautical decor and happy to adopt the theme as her own for her big day.
To coordinate with the vibrant red, yellow and navy flags already in place at the club, Katie and TJ opted for equally bold apple green and ocean blue for their colors. At their reception, a ship's rope embellished the table displaying the guest book—a yacht log, cleverly—and a nautical flag marked each navy blue dining table. Ivory china, minilanterns and centerpieces of white hydrangeas, mums and tulips in bucket-style vases by Naples-based floral designer Alese Lawrence tied the look together.
For dinner, Katie and TJ selected dishes that reflected the warm, coastal locale. They served tomato, papaya and avocado salad, and yellowtail snapper with citrus orange salsa. A local band dazzled the crowd with a mix of music, including some Irish tunes that prompted one guest to perform a step dance. The couple's own choreographed routine to "Cheek to Cheek" was great fun (though TJ forgot a few moves, Katie recalls with a laugh). Still, in the company of family and friends, the night was smooth sailing.
