Aimee and Jerry in Alexandria, VA

Twenty-five acres of lush lawns and meadows inspire a colorful celebration

Wanting her bridesmaids to feel comfortable and stand out on their own, Aimee gave them free rein to choose their own Jim Hjelm gown to flatter their style. Aimee carried a simple bouquet of calla lilies; her bridesmaids carried orchids.

Location: Alexandria, VA

Aimee and Jerry were determined to tie the knot outdoors, so they chose to have their wedding ceremony and reception at River Farm, a showplace of fine gardening and landscaping owned by the American Horticultural Society. The manor-style house (which was once owned by George Washington) features an elegant ballroom and parlor, but it was the gardens and grounds that interested the couple most.

As the big day approached, nature seemed to be on their side, and with all forecasts predicting lovely weather, Aimee and Jerry canceled their tent reservation three days before the wedding. Although an unexpectedly drizzly wedding morning made for a very nervous few hours, by the time the wedding began, the sky was a clear September blue.

A judge, who is also a friend of the couple, married Aimee and Jerry before their 100 guests on a lawn overlooking the river. In addition to their self-composed vows, Aimee and Jerry exchanged their own version of the "Dr. Seuss Wedding Vows," in which Jerry promised to "rub her head" and Aimee vowed to "make the bed." Newly wed, the couple walked up the aisle laughing.
