Ocean breezes and warm sand make for an unforgettable Cape Cod wedding

Holly Lemkau and Terence Doran were destined to marry by the sea. The two avid surfers met in the Hamptons, the A list–filled beach towns outside New York City, and got engaged in Osterville, MA, a coastal Cape Cod town where Holly summered as a child. For their June 4, 2005, nuptials, the couple returned to Osterville, the perfect setting for a "beachy, yet elegant wedding weekend," says Holly. A golf tournament, deep-sea fishing excursion and cookout kicked off the weekend in true Cape Cod style.

For the main event, Holly, whose job it is to plan ultrachic parties at Vogue, called upon Abby Gordon of Hopple Popple in Boston to help coordinate the details. Gordon worked with the couple to incorporate a scallop-shell motif on the invitations and welcome tote-bags. Their inspiration for this theme, 150 coral-toned shells that Holly found on a Hamptons beach, served as escort cards, and shell-shaped chocolates were given as favors.

Following an early-evening ceremony at a local Catholic church, Holly and Terence's reception commenced at the Wianno Club, a private golf and tennis club on Nantucket Sound. Marge Bastos of Columbine Custom Floral Design in Boston, created centerpieces of peonies, tulips and English garden roses in coral and hot pink, which stood out brilliantly against the white organdy table linens. The couple's 200 guests enjoyed hearts-of-palm-and-avocado salad, tuna tartare and filet mignon, then hit the dance floor for the rest of the night. "We wanted a big, fun weekend with our friends and family," says Holly. "The whole thing was perfect."

Learn From Holly and Terence
Incorporate culture: As a tribute to Terence's Irish heritage (and for luck), floral designer Marge Bastos interspersed Bells of Ireland in the church arrangements, and the priest said an Irish blessing to close the ceremony.
Share local favorites: Holly and Terence filled welcome tote-bags for their out-of-town guests with goodies from the Cape Cod area: bottles of Nantucket Nectars, Fenway Park peanuts and Cape Cod Potato Chips.
Give your menu meaning: The couple arranged for the chef at the Wianno Club to re-create dishes from their first-date restaurant. Holly and Terence also served the cake with butter-pecan and mint-chip ice cream, their favorite flavors from the Osterville ice cream shop where Terence proposed.

Hydrangeas and seashells embellish the couple's five-tier cake.
