Gemstones aren’t the usual inspiration for a wedding theme, but they played a key role for Holly D’Lane, a custom-jewelry designer, who married Hugh Heslep, an investor, last June. "I love them and knew I wanted to wear a dress in a unique pattern with color," says the bride, who chose to wed in a Colleen Quen silk dress covered with brilliant orange and yellow butterflies. When your dress is this original, the usual wedding site just won’t do. So Holly and Hugh, who live in Los Angeles, started shopping the California vineyard scene, finally deciding on the Summerwood Winery, in Paso Robles.
Marrying in a vineyard simplified planning—"we didn’t need any decorations, since the setting was so lovely," says Holly—and gave the duo a chance to do things in a less traditional way, like marrying on a Monday instead of the weekend. On arrival, their 37 guests were greeted with a glass of Viognier, a crisp white wine, then taken on a tour of the winery, with the bridal couple in tow.
Afterward, Holly and Hugh took their vows amid the towering rows of grapes, then lingered with their guests at Summerwood for a private wine tasting, featuring Syrahs, Cabernet Sauvignons, Zinfandels and plenty of chocolate truffles. Then it was on to dinner at Villa Creek Restaurant for organic beef and butternut squash enchiladas, served family style at a U-shaped banquet table. "We wanted to enjoy being with all of our guests from the moment they arrived," says Holly, "and by keeping things small and intimate, we absolutely did."
