When Christina Yuni heard about an MIT alumni brunch in San Francisco, she decided to crash it—she's not an alumna—for purely professional reasons. At the time Christina was working for a large investment bank, and she was hoping to meet new clients. Her most valuable contact, however, turned out to be entirely personal—Paul Friedman, her future husband. The two discovered they had a lot in common: "We had mutual friends and went to the same social functions," Christina says. Within a few months, they were a couple.

Christina and Paul's engagement, two years later, was much less complicated than their first meeting. "We decided to get engaged together, and picked out the ring together," Paul says. In fact, the couple didn't just pick a ring: They designed one, and had it custom-made. Paul surprised Christina by giving her matching earrings for Christmas.

Copper chargers were set with small black Zen stones to anchor menu cards and burgundy napkins. The six-course meal began with mango soup, followed by baked brioche with sautéed wild mushrooms and asparagus; gnocchi with gorgonzola and caramelized Bosc pears; braised artichoke bottoms; peach sorbet and pan-seared duck breast with a drunken cherry compote and crisp duck cracklings.
