The Made of Honor star talks about her real-life wedding experiences
If you could do it over again, would you consider having a "man of honor"?
I actually did! When it came time to choose my maid of honor I had a lot of amazing girlfriends, but the one friend who had always been a constant in my life was my friend Mike. When I asked him, I think he was a little surprised, but then he said yes and was really excited about it.
How did he handle it?
He was so good! He was really supportive and was the go-to guy for all my guests. Since we were having a destination wedding in Australia, a lot of people were coming who didn't know anyone, so he did a great job of giving introductions, plus he cooked dinner for all of us, which was great.
What was the biggest mistake you made during your wedding planning, and what advice would you give to Brides.com readers to avoid that mistake?
I had a dress custom-made for me by a woman who has cats, and my husband is really allergic, so I had to get the dress dry-cleaned before I wore it. I got it back two hours before we got on the plane and it had shrunk in all the wrong places. Luckily we were able to do a few tricks to salvage it for the wedding but I would definitely give advice to refrain from dry cleaning your dress until after the wedding.
How did Tom's (Patrick Dempsey) maid-of-honor responsibilities differ from those of a female maid of honor?
They didn't really differ all that much. He is trying to win me back in the movie so his group of friends encourages him to be really adamant about being in the wedding. And he has to overcome a lot of obstacles-he is sabotaged by one of the other bridesmaids because she's mad that she wasn't chosen to be the maid of honor. He gives it good effort, although most maids of honor shouldn't try to break up the wedding in the 11th hour.
What do you think is the hardest part of being a maid of honor?
I was the maid of honor at my best friend's wedding. We had known each other since grade school, and I was so honored that she asked me. The most nerve-racking part was giving the speech. At my wedding it meant so much to me to hear those words about you as a couple, so I wanted to do the same for her.
Bonus question: What was it like playing opposite Patrick Dempsey?
It was the best time ever. I have been a fan of his for a long time from Grey's, and he is just so fun to be around. He has a great comedic sense and does slapstick really well. We got to giggle together all the time, just improvising through the scenes.
