The California coast sets the stage for a surprise proposal

"Josh promised me we would get engaged in 2007. Not that I was pushing, I just hate the 'unknown.' We were approaching Thanksgiving and still nothing! How long was he going to make me wait and still keep his promise? I thought. Until Dec. 31? The weekend before we were going home for Thanksgiving he told me we were meeting friends for brunch at the Montage resort, my favorite spot in Laguna Beach.

When we got to the resort he told me our friends were running late and said why don't we take a walk on the beach. We stepped outside onto the picturesque Laguna coast. It was still early and quiet, with just a few people, including a group of artists painting, on the beach. We headed toward the stairs to make our decent onto the sand. Me, wearing jeans and lace-up espadrilles, was not so sure about the whole sand situation. Josh walked out onto the beach in front of me. I took my first few steps and decided that four-inch wedges and sand do not mix.

I was about to turn around and head back when Josh dropped down on one knee—the waves washing up on the sand behind him and the cliffs in the background."
