Alfred Angelo designer Michael Shettel shares his advice for picking fabulous frocks for your girls
As a bridesmaid, how can you show your individual style when you are wearing the same dress as the rest of the wedding party?
First and foremost the day is all about the bride so try to keep your personality and flair under wraps. If you want to show some of your own individuality, sport a sexy bra and panties, or wear your own signature scent. This is a time to celebrate a good friend and share this amazing moment of her life.
What is the most popular color in bridesmaid dresses? Why do you think it is that color?
Navy, black and espresso are our top selling colors. These colors create an elegant and formal feel, plus they are simple and classic which means they can absolutely can be worn again.
What are some new trends in bridesmaid dresses?
Short, short, short. Soft, sweet and sassy styles are hot trends for this season. Shades of purple are also really popular for us now too.
What type of dress should a bride choose for her bridesmaids that will flatter every figure?
Delegate, don't choose! Select a color or theme and let the bridesmaids find a style that makes them look and feel great. This is a great expression of individuality, personal style and makes for a more interesting bridal party. A chic and elegant looking bridal party will only make the bride look that much better!
What is your best piece of advice for brides who are currently looking for their wedding dress?
Splurge, treat yourself and keep an open mind. Remember, it's your dream! This is your big day, when all eyes will be on you. It's your time to shine. Embrace the beauty that you are!
Next year is Alfred Angelo's 75th anniversary. How have the designs and trends changed in the line throughout the years?
The 2009 collection is inspired by nearly eight decades of Alfred Angelo's bridal designs. Dresses are softer, slimmer, and much sexier than past decades. I think classic silhouettes have longevity, like the A-line, empire and strapless. The more fashion forward styles have a tendency to change more quickly because they follow fashion more closely. Over the last few years, red carpet looks and destination weddings have had a profound influence on bridal designs. 2009 introduces classics in a new "modern fit," referencing our history, but remaining on the forefront of design.
