Headpieces Glossary

Backpiece

A barrette or comb that fastens the veil to the back of the head. Best for: formal or informal affairs.

Bunwrap

A circular band or piece of fabric that encircles a bun or updo; a veil may be attached to it. Best for: long, thick hair.

Comb

A small hair ornament secured with comb teeth; may be worn on top of the head with a veil attached to it. Best for: very short hair.

Crown

A formal, full-circle headpiece that sits on top of the head. Best for: long hair worn up or down at formal affairs.

Hair Vine

Wired vine-like ornament held in place with a comb or pin. Best for: long hairstyles at informal or semi-formal weddings.

Half Crown

A half-circle of jewels that is smaller than a crown but taller than a tiara. Best for: formal affairs.

Headband

A half-circle band available in a variety of widths and styles. Best for: long hair and short hair (thinner headbands only).

Juliet Cap

A small, round skullcap adorned with pearls or semi-precious stones that fits snugly on the top or back of the head. Best for: full-faced brides.

Pillbox Hat

A small, round, brimless hat (think Jacqueline Kennedy). Best for: short hair, bobs, or sleek updos at informal, daytime affairs.

Pouf

A gathered piece of tulle or netting—fastened to a comb, headband, or headpiece—that creates height for the veil. Best for: full-faced brides.

Snood

A knitted or openwork net used to encase long hair at the back of the neck, or attached to a hat. Best for: long, thick hair.

Tiara

A bejeweled or beaded semi-circle. Best for: any face shape or hairstyle; comes in a variety of styles and levels of formality.

Wreath (or Garland)

A crown of faux or real flowers or foliage. Best for: long or short hair at casual or garden weddings.
