Chelsea Clinton's wedding dress, Vera Wang
In the days and weeks leading up to Chelsea Clinton's wedding, the fashion world was abuzz with one single question: Oscar or Vera? In the end, Chelsea chose a ballgown by Vera Wang (although her mom, Hillary, did end up wearing Oscar de la Renta). It effortlessly blended a grand silhouette with Vera's signature laser-cut, raw-edged silk tulle and organza, and featured just the right amount of sparkle in the form of a jeweled belt. We'd expected the former First Daughter to wear something classic, tailored, and preppy. So her choice of a more elaborate, fairytale look threw us for a loop but clearly indicated that Chelsea was reveling in her moment as a bride. And given the grandeur of the occasion, a lush, romantic ballgown made perfect sense.
The "Chelsea" look is already catching on, inspiring many bridal designers to enlarge the girth of their tulle and organza ballgowns with additional tiers and layers of fabric, and add interchangeable jeweled belts to their offerings. In 2011, all eyes will be on princess-to-be Kate Middleton, whose gown will no doubt have a similar ripple effect.
