Q: Both my father and grandfather have passed away, and I've never been close to my stepfather, but my mother says he should escort me down the aisle. Can I walk down the aisle by myself?

A: It's up to you. It's not uncommon for a bride to walk down the aisle solo, but if this is going to cause a rift between you and your mother (think ahead to next Thanksgiving), you should carefully weigh your decision. As a compromise, your stepdad could walk with you partway down the aisle, then take a seat when he reaches his pew, rather than escorting you all the way tot he altar. Alternatively, you could have both your mother and your stepfather escort you, or Mom could walk you alone.
