Is it okay to provide Hawaiian shirts for the waitstaff at our tropical-themed reception?

A: That depends on where you're having the party. Some venues allow their waitstaff to go out-of-uniform; others don't. Check with your catering manager. Keep in mind that a tropical theme often looks most appropriate in a casual setting. If you've already booked a more formal site, like a hotel ballroom, and you have your heart set on the shirts, it's still possible to pull off an island theme—but don't hold back on the vivid flowers, bamboo chairs and tiki torches. In a case like this, more is more.
