The sooner the better
Start researching destinations as early as possible. Book your hotel room at least six months in advance for the best access to popular resorts and tours.
Choose a theme
Decide what type of trip you're after: a secluded beach getaway, a rustic mountain retreat, an urban escape, a party-hearty cruise or an adventurous expedition.
Narrow down
Create a list of destinations, and rule out any that won't work during the season in which you're marrying. You won't want to visit a beach during rainy season or a city when it's too cold to comfortably tour on foot.
Do your homework

Expert advice
Hire a travel agent who specializes in honeymoons or in the type of honeymoon (like an African safari) that you wish to take.
Splurge money
Set aside cash for a splurge: a couples massage on the beach, an upgrade to business class, dinner at a fancy restaurant or a big-ticket item from the country you're traveling to, if going overseas.
Health watch
Look into vaccinations if you're traveling to an exotic location like Africa or Nicaragua. Check out the Center of Disease Control's travel section at cdc.gov/travel for a complete list of shots you’ll need to get.
Foreign tongues
Learn the local language if you're traveling overseas. Get tips online from travlang.com.
Extracurricular activities
Take classes in any special skills you'll need, such as scuba diving or mountain climbing.
Picture perfect
Buy or borrow a great camera; go digital so you won't have to worry about damaging film in airport security.
Purchase luggage
If you're traveling to a fabulous shopping destination, include a lightweight duffle bag to haul all of your new purchases back.
Passport check
Make sure that your passport and/or visa haven't expired. If you're changing your last name, be sure that these documents reflect the change.
Medical matters
If you're thinking about getting pregnant on the honeymoon, consult with your doctor and stop taking birth control at least a month before the trip.
Pocket cash
If you’re traveling overseas, purchase $50 or $100 in foreign currency in advance of your departure.
Courier call
Arrange to stop delivery of your mail and newspapers.
Babysitting basics
Set up pet care or child care for the duration of your trip.
