Even if you and your guy have decided that you won't be picking out your ring together, there are still a few things he should know before he starts shopping. Here are four things to make sure you tell him before he heads to the jewelry store.
1. If your family has an heirloom ring or stone
Whether it's your great-grandmother's engagement ring or a diamond from a pair of your mother's earrings, make sure he knows about any jewelry that is supposed to be passed down to you. This way he can talk to your family about the options, from designing a ring to incorporate a special stone to resetting a piece to combine family history with a more modern sensibility.
2. If you have a preference for a specific style, metal, or stone shape
While shopping alone means that your guy probably wants to have a significant say in what your engagement ring will look like, ask if he'd like you to give him a few style guidelines. If you only ever wear yellow gold jewelry, he might want to pick that over white gold or platinum. Or if your jewelry box leans more toward simple, sleek pieces and pearls, he may lean toward a super-classic setting instead of an ornate design.

3. If you are interested in a stone other than a diamond
A white sapphire will give you a similar look to a diamond, while a colored stone will really set your ring apart, or could be a beautiful complement to a center diamond in a multi-stone ring.
4. Your size
This is probably the most important detail to share with him, even if you want the style of your engagement ring to be a complete surprise. You'll want to wear it right away, so make sure it will fit! Drop by your local jeweler and get sized to make sure you're giving him the right number.
