No one needs to tell you how stressful this time of your life can be. Only about 23 percent of us hire professional wedding planners, so for the majority of brides the buck stops with us. One large national survey found that for half of us, wedding planning was even more stressful than we thought it would be. These surprising strategies can help.
1. Embrace mindless chores.
You might feel like you don't have time to load the dishwasher or fold laundry, but a study out of Florida State University found that mindfully doing little chores can relieve stress. The study found that taking some time to focus on the warmness and smell of water increases mental inspiration and decreases nervousness.
2. Have more sex.
When wedding planning gets stressful, why not turn to the person you're actually planning this event with? Sex feels good, and it's been shown to reduce anxiety. More importantly, if some of your wedding planning stress is coming from disagreements with your fiancé, a roll in the hay can help you stay bonded, too.
3. Eat some carbs.
If you've been dieting to fit into your dream dress, chances are you've been cutting back on carbohydrate-heavy foods like pasta and bread. But don't slash too much. "Carbohydrates help maintain serotonin levels in our brain, a key neurotransmitter which keeps us feeling even-keeled," says registered dietitian Kate Scarlata, RDN, co-author of The 21-Day Tummy. "Include a serving or two of whole grain bread, sweet potato, oats, or quinoa at each meal to stay energized, happy and trim."
4. Cut down on Facebook.
Researchers have found that if you're already feeling anxious, spending time on Facebook can make it worse. Another study found that if you have a tendency to feel envious, Facebook can also increase the risk of depression. Bottom line: A break from some social media in the midst of your wedding planning might be a relief. Just stick to Pinterest!
