All hail the mullet cake? Many brides and grooms these days love the idea of a groom's cake, which complements the wedding cake, but is themed to the groom's specific tastes, whether they be, say, hunting, fishing, or sports. But what happens when both the bride and groom want to celebrate their non-wedding-related passions? British couple Kia Parsons and Billy Bunning did just that by turning the dual confection notion on its head for their August 14 wedding.
Both Parsons and Bunning are huge fans of superheroes, so they decided to combine tradition with their interests into one incredible-looking "Double Take" cake, created by Julia Baker of Tier by Tier. "We both like superheroes but the hardest part was agreeing which heroes we were going to chose," Parsons told People of their mutual selection.
"They wanted to show both sides of their personalities, both classy and fun," Baker added. "Together we sat down over tea and cake and drew up their perfect cake. One year later, the first time they saw the cake was the morning of their wedding and they both loved it."
The end result is pretty fantastic. The front looks like a classic wedding dessert, with white fondant, cascading sugar flowers, and dots. The back, on the other hand, has the white fondant parted like curtains to show four tiers featuring Captain America, Spider Man, Batman and Iron Man.
It took 40 hours to turn out the cake, but it looks like the effort was well worth it. On its own, the classic part of the cake is totally gorgeous!
The rest of Parsons and Bunning's nuptials was equally offbeat — they incorporated superheroes into their table names, groomsmen socks, cufflinks, and their guest book!
