Whether or not you're a bride this summer, chances are you'll also be making the wedding rounds as a guest. (Quite a few times, in fact, if your summer looks anything like ours.) So we've been on the search for fresh sources of inspiration, or as we call it, a wedding-guest uniform (especially if they're destination weddings, in which case all of your beauty products, accessories, and clothing must fit inside one tiny carry-on, because God forbid your luggage gets lost—trust us, we know all about that) and in our quest, spoke to Tata Harper, founder of her namesake organic skincare brand and also just an all-around chic person. Whatever event she's attending, she always looks fresh-faced and effortlessly, stylishly appropriate. Here, she delightfully, detailedly, tells us how she'll be getting ready for all of her summer weddings.
On her skincare regimen: "I love using lots of products--I have an extensive regimen--but I cut back in the summer because I feel like I don't need as much product on my skin. But I'll still prep with what I call the "Glow Getter": I apply our Regenerating Cleanser onto dry skin, add the Resurfacing Mask on top, leave them both on for 20 minutes, and wash off with water. They exfoliate, polish, and help a lot with getting radiant skin—especially for daytime weddings when you don't want to wear a lot of makeup. Then I use the Hydrating Floral Essence, the Elixir Vitae Serum, and the eye cream."
"Since summer weddings are typically outside, I'll put on sunscreen. I like Suntegrity 5 in 1 Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen. It's tinted, so it helps even my skin tone, too. I like to blend it with our Illuminating Moisture—I mix together a pump of each, and that gives you a huge glow. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied so much throughout the day, and since this one is tinted, you won't get that white look when you reapply it over makeup."
On her makeup look: "I'm not a huge fan of wearing lots of makeup, especially in the summer, and especially for a daytime wedding. I like the 'barely there' look. So I use RMS Uncover-up Concealer for redness around the nose and a little underneath the eyes. Then I use my Lip & Cheek Tint in Very Naughty. It's a deep red shade and my go-to blush. I think wearing blush in the summer is super important, especially if you're not tan, because it gives you healthy color. I'll put it on my lips, too, and then on top of that, I'll use the Lip Treatment in Be Adored, which has a sheer raspberry tint and leaves your lips really glossy."
"For my eyes, I'm obsessed with RMS Cream Eye Polish in Solar; it's a golden metallic. Then I'll use W3LL People Expressionist Mascara. I love, love that mascara. It's light enough that you can put it on without it crumbling or caking on your lashes. And I also use their Hypnotist Eye Pencil in brown to create a bit of a smoky eye. And that pretty much does it for makeup."
On the summer hair situation: "When I know I'm going to be in the sun, I like to start prepping the night before and sleep with a dense oil to nourish and bring luster to my hair. I use the Revitalizing Body Oil, and then I'll put it in a braid and sleep with that on. The next morning, I'll start with Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt. It's great for cleansing your scalp, but I find it's a bit too drying for the rest of my hair, so I'll shampoo the rest of my hair with Rahua's new Color Full Shampoo. I follow it with Christophe Robin's Regenerating Mask; it brings softness back to my hair. Then I'll put a tiny bit of our Replenishing Nutrient Complex on to keep flyaways under control. I typically put my hair in a loose braided updo for summer weddings so that my hair stays in place for the whole day."
On the natural nail polish dilemma: "It's hard because there's nothing that's really natural for nails—some brands are better for you than others, but whatever you do, you're always compromising. I like Deborah Lipmann; in the summer, I generally go for a pinky pastel instead of my typical bright red."
On her go-to fragrance: "I like using our aromatic treatments; they're mood perfumes. When I'm attending a wedding, I use the energy one because it gives you a lot of vitality so you're energetic for the whole day."
On her summer-wedding style: "I go for a printed, flowy dress from Johanna Ortiz or Rosie Assoulin And I'll definitely wear sandals. You're usually on the grass, so I don't like to have a very high heel. I was just at a wedding a couple of weeks ago and I wore a pair of silver Aquazzura sandals that tie in the front."
"I definitely don't wear a lot of jewelry--just diamond studs and a diamond tennis bracelet. I don't like to wear too many accessories in the summer, but a small raffia bag is a nice finishing touch. I love Nannacay; they're small and have little pom-poms on them. And then inside of it, I'll put my Hydrating Floral Essence for touch ups, along with the Very Naughty Lip & Cheek Tint, the aromatic treatment, and a little antique compact mirror. And then I'm ready to go."
