When your best friend gets engaged, you're probably jumping for joy with endless excitement. You've probably had the marriage conversation with them many times before, and now that it's happening, you can't wait to start counting down the days until the wedding actually arrives.
But after you've found out the wedding day and you go to your boss to take off work, the worst thing ever happens: your boss tells you that you can't take off a Friday or a Monday to go to the wedding. So, what should you do?
The first thing to do is have a sit-down meeting with your boss in person. Let him or her know how important this wedding is to you. Ask, if possible, if you can work remotely for the day — or pick up an extra shift/overtime next week to make up for the day you're taking off to travel to attend the wedding. Try to bargain and negotiate with them.
If they are saying no, no, no, and won't budge at all, see if you can perhaps find a way to travel to and from the wedding in just one day, so that you don't have to take off a day before or a day after the wedding.
The best thing you can do is plan far ahead for the wedding. Ask to take off work as soon as you know the wedding date. Waiting until the last minute may make it almost impossible for your boss to say yes.
If you can't take off and you're stuck at work, ask a friend who is going to the wedding to Skype you in, on mute, for the ceremony and even parts of the reception. That way, you can feel like you're there, even though you won't be.
