While it’s always sad for a wedding day to come to an end, there is one more thing to look forward to: The honeymoon! This newlywed adventure is a totally sweet way to start your marriage. The question is, should you head to the airport the morning after you say “I do?” Our experts weigh in.
Honeymoon timing depends on two factors: When the two of you want to go, and what will work with your schedules. Sure, the idea of jetting off as soon as your wedding is over is great, but if you’ve already taken a lot of time off of work, you may need to postpone your departure.
Also consider the weather at your desired destination. The Bahamas are lovely unless you’re trying to hit the beach in prime hurricane season, and Paris is a great idea when it’s not dreary and rainy in the spring. If the best time to travel lines up with your wedding date, then by all means, book your flights! But if you’re getting married right before your destination’s annual heat wave, you might want to hold off and have a belated honeymoon at a later date.
The upside to honeymooning immediately is that you get to continue that feeling of newlyweded bliss a little longer than your wedding night. Go somewhere fabulous, spend as much time together as you can, and then come back to reality as a married woman who is refreshed, relaxed, and ready to start the next chapter of her life.
If you do decide to postpone your honeymoon for a few months, it’s still a great idea to take a minimoon right after the wedding. Even if it’s only a night or two at a local B&B or downtown hotel, taking some time to really let your marriage sink in and relax with your new spouse will make it feel all the more real.
