Samira Wiley is officially a prisoner of love. (Sorry, we had to...) Back in October, the Orange Is The New Black actress announced her engagement to OITNB show writer Lauren Morelli, posting a totes adorbs engagement ring selfie to share the engagement news. Now, the pair of nearly-weds are finally opening up on all of the details of their engagement, revealing their popped question story for the very first time.
Wiley and Morelli actually got their start on the Litchfield prison yard after meeting on the set of the Netflix hit. "I'd already seen Samira's audition tape and immediately had a crush on her — the complication being that I was married to a man at the time." Morelli revealed in the February issue of Out magazine. Eventually, the Netflix series writer split with her ex-husband, publicly came out in a now-infamous Mic.com essay, and now, over four years later, the pair is finally trading in their orange jumpsuits for wedding white.
Four months ago, Wiley revealed that her sweetie had popped the question, posting a pic to social media that featured her simplistic chic engagement ring — a princess-cut diamond, uniquely sitting vertically on the band.
But just how did that sparkler end up on the actress' finger? The cutesy couple told Out that Morelli proposed before a weekend getaway in Palm Springs.
"I realized I could propose right before and then we’d have the weekend there to celebrate," explained Morelli. "I found a ring, and they shipped it to me, and it was as if someone had handed me a ball of fire and said, 'Here, tend to this.'"
When the big day came, Morelli and Wiley met at their Los Angeles home where Morelli sweetly popped the question.
"She asked me to sit next to her," Wiley said of the proposal. "Then she got me up, and we started dancing together, and she pulled a ring from behind the couch. Lauren has been married before, so I wanted her to tell me she was ready, her to be the one to propose. I didn't know she was as ready as she was. I was completely shocked. I was crying uncontrollably and kept backing away from her."
"I was so nervous and terrified she knew it was coming, but she was so shocked that I couldn't get her to stop crying," added Morelli. "She was hyperventilating. I thought, 'Oh, this is not good. This has gone too far.'"
But once all the happy tears subsided, the couple was all smiles. (If you need any proof, just check out their engagement selfie below!)
"She was very clear she'd wait for me to be ready, so to give her something I knew she wanted so much was incredible," said Morelli. "It was the most magical day of my life."
