Whether you choose to commemorate your cake cutting with a favorite song, champagne toast, or cake smash — your wedding cake is one of the focal points of your big day. We reached out to baking extraordinaire, Lauren Bohl White of A White Cake for her expert tips on how to bring your dream wedding cake to life.
Show and tell
"Pink" can mean different things to you and your baker, making visuals a key player in the design process. Swatches of fabric, Pinterest boards, a copy of your invitation and even paint chips are a great way to help articulate your vision and keep everyone on the same page.
Fondant vs. Buttercream
Opt for fondant if you're looking to incorporate real ribbon, piping or painting into the design; don't pick fondant thinking your cake will hold up better in warm weather — this is a big misconception. At the end of the day, this decision comes down to appearance and taste so make sure to try both!
Pick your favorite flavor
Select the flavors that you want to eat since you'll never be able to please everyone. If you want to switch up the flavors by tier, think about how the cake will be served. Will the waiters alternate flavors by seat, or will slices be put on a table for people to choose for themselves?
Since most cakes are priced per serving, it's tempting to order less than your guest count to reduce costs. If you're having the cake passed later in the night or on a dessert table, go for it. Otherwise, do your catering staff a favor and order the correct amount so each guest is served a proper slice!
