While trends may come and go, bridal hairstyles always favor the classics. Enter the chignon: the epitome of timeless style for decades and the most requested updo among brides-to-be. Traditionally worn sleek and pinned at the nape of the neck, a chignon can be updated with a few simple tips. "No one wants to be the cookie-cutter bride, and the best way to modernize any expected style is to add a personal touch," says celebrity hairstylist Angelo David Pisacreta of Angelo David Salon. We've gathered 10 ways to freshen up the classic style, so you can try one or a few at your hair trial and find the look that's right for your wedding:
1. Go messy for a romantic updo.
"If you're saying, 'I do' on the beach, add a texture spray to your chignon before wrapping it up," says Pisacreta.
__2. Looking to add some edge to your smooth style?
Create two small chignons at the nape of your neck and leave one long piece free in the center.__ Wrap the loose hair around the buns in a figure eight shape and violà.
3. Pump up the volume.
"Make somewhat fine hair into a fuller chignon by crimping your hair to add some texture before you wrap and pin it into place," says Pisacreta. Twist and weave strands for extra oomph.
4. Sparkle and shine.
"If your wedding is a more formal affair, accessorize with a decorative pin or classic clip to add elegance," says Pisacreta. A single statement piece or small crystal hairpins are all you need.
5. Create an interesting shape.
"Secure the base, like a pony, then curl the pieces up and pin to make a flower-petal shape," he says. Mist with spray and you're good-to-go.
6. Go boho.
Start by creating braids of varying sizes. Gather them into a chignon to look effortlessly cool.
7. Act like royalty.
A chignon already exudes regal glamour. Complete the look with a fascinator hat à la Kate Middleton.
8. Finish your look with fresh flowers. "Don't overpower it — baby's breath are perfect," says Pisacreta.
9. Change positions.
Opt for a side chignon (perhaps with a one-shoulder dress?) instead of the traditional center placement.
10. Bangs offer an that extra va va voom.
"Add sultry side-swept bangs to create a flirty feeling," says Pisacreta.
