There isn't a bride-to-be around who doesn't want to look her best for her big day. Part of making that happen potentially involves a change in diet — but it may also mean ramping up or changing up your exercise regimen. Los Angeles is considered a trailblazer for the trendiest workouts and fitness methods around, but which of them really work, and how fast will you see real results? We're sharing a few of our favorite LA workouts to try so you can look and feel your best on your big day.
There's a reason Physique 57 has 57 in its title — these intense ballet barre workouts last 57 sweat-inducing minutes. This muscle-shaking, interval-based method is perfect for brides who want to tone up and get into amazing shape pre-honeymoon. Over the course of 57 minutes you'll perform small, specific movements that work on endurance, strength, and flexibility. Physique 57's owner, Jennifer Vaughn Maanavi and Tanya Becker, founded the studio in NYC but it has quickly expanded to several cities throughout the world — including Los Angeles! The combination of ballet and toning in a boutique setting is the ideal workout for a bride who wants to slim down and look her best on the big day.
A workout that utilizes a piece of equipment akin to a medieval torcher device, known as a Megaformer™ is definitely going to give your body a workout. If you've ever tried traditional Pilates on a reformer, do not be fooled: this is not Pilates! Though it incorporates elements of Pilates like balance and core engagement, that is where the similarities end. Lagree Fitness is a workout that can be found in any number of studios in the Los Angeles area. The workout is done in an hour or less, with instructors emphasizing extremely slow moves, and rapid transitions between exercises. This makes for a sweat drenching, body burning (and muscle shaking!) experience — claiming you can burn up to 1000 calories per class. Celebrity fans of Lagree Fitness include Vanessa Hudgens, Karlie Kloss, David Duchovny, Eva Longoria, Marcia Cross, Sophia Vergara, Alessandra Ambrosia, all three of the Kardashian sisters, Paris Hilton, and more. Sebastien Lagree, the method's founder says, "Lagree Fitness is super intense. Don't be fooled by the slow speed movements; this workout will get your muscles shaking within the first few minutes and leave you sore for days!"
Rise Nation __
Rise Nation is a Los Angeles fitness hotspot located in West Hollywood that features a 30-minute workout – done exclusively on a VersaClimber machine — that burns upwards of 600 to 800 calories a session. Jason Walsh, celebrity trainer who infamously transformed Matt Damon, John Krasinski, and Bradley Cooper for huge blockbuster roles, created Rise Nation. The VersaClimber is virtually impossible to coast on, so you know you're getting a great workout — and there is no way to relax on this machine. Every moment of the workout engages your core, speeds up your heart rate, and strengthens your muscles. Climbing on the VersaClimber mimics the motions of a crawl, which aligns your body and reaffirms good posture — with zero impact. Fans of Rise Nation include Bradley Cooper, Ashlee Greene, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Ina Shayk, and Ashley Tisdale.
Known for its ab shredding, body lengthening results, "Pilates is a fantastic way to slim down before a wedding," says Melanie Archer, a Pilates Sports Center master trainer and owner of Archer Pilates in Los Angeles. "For brides who want a fun, low-intensity, low-impact environment where they can slim down their waists, and develop long, lean sculpted muscles, Pilates may be a perfect fit," she shares. Done on a mat, a reformer, or any number of other pieces of equipment, Pilates focuses on abdominal strength (the core) to execute movement.
As the name suggests, Circuit Works LA is a circuit-training studio that combines aerobic (cardiovascular) and anaerobic (resistance) exercises into each and every class. By rotating through a series of stations, the studio claims you can burn more calories there per minute than in any other fitness center in Los Angeles. A heart monitor is strapped to your chest upon arrival so that they can actually count the calories for you. Regarding workouts, there are several stations of varying difficulty, including TRX and weight training. Participants alternate between a floor station and their treadmill every two minutes — all cued by the instructor. The coolest thing about the entire process (aside from the fat and sweat dripping from your body) is the fact you have your own personal status screen hanging high up in the room, tracking your heart rate, calorie burn, and more.
A Los Angeles based boot camp is not your everyday bootcamp. Their 600 calorie burning workouts focus on a combination of cardio plus strength training exercises, followed by stretching and nutritional guidance to help build lean body mass. They claim they've seen amazingly fit, beautiful brides, with testimonials to prove it. Brides in the program have lost anywhere from 5 to 50 pounds getting ready for the big day. Bootcamp LA owner Jay Kerwin suggests brides-to-be begin a program with them between 4 and 6 months out, though some have seen great results coming in as close to 2- 3 months prior. Classes are one hour long and held mornings and evenings during the week and on Saturday mornings at the world famous NHM La Brea Tar Pits Garden Park located near Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles. "What makes Boot Camp LA so popular is that the workouts are always changing, challenging and fun. People often get bored in their workouts, but we don't allow that to happen," adds Kerwin.
