What went up for auction at Christies's yesterday? A pretty dreamy engagement ring—emerald-cut, 16.21-carat center stone with VS1 clarity and I color, flanked by 1.8 carat diamonds on each side, and set in platinum. While the seller was listed only as "a gentleman," it was later confirmed to be Kris Humphries, as in Kim Kardashian's ex.
While Humphries originally paid a reported two million dollars for the Lorraine Schwartz showstopper, he recouped just a little more than one third of that at Christie's—the ring sold for $620,000, according to the Huffington Post, part of which is to be devoted to charity. The back-and-forth between two unidentified phone bidders fueled the auction, which started at $200,000 and was expected to net about $500,000.
That's one-quarter of the retail price, and, in my book, that qualifies for the heck of a good deal. Even the winning bid is about a 30 percent discount, which isn't too shabby. But, not to get all superstitious, wouldn't it make you a little uneasy to know that the ring you were wearing previously belonged to a couple who only stuck it out for 72 days?
