Now that you're happily married, you may find yourself wanting to spend time with other couples who are just as cozily-in-love as you. "There's an old adage that says like attracts like — and when you're coupled, you tend to seek out other couples because you have mutual interests, create mutual support systems for each other, and validate each other," explains relationship expert April Masini. "All of that is part of living a healthy life. Of course, it's always a good thing to have singles in your life, as well, to give yourself a reality check and simply to be a more interesting person! You are part of a couple, but you're also an individual."
Start your search for new couple friends at places you already frequent because you love the area or activity they propagate. "The best places to meet others with whom you want to become friends are places where you have a natural interest.," Masini says. "For instance, meeting people at your gym, your church or synagogue, or your child's school PTA meetings — are all places where you've got common ground."
Another source for finding new friends are your existing friends who can make introductions to other like-minded couples on your behalf, suggests Masini. "Some more unique places are travel groups, volunteer situations, a mutual pet resources like a vet's office or a dog park, or simply waiting in an airport lounge for your mutually late or eventually cancelled flight. Sharing a cab or simply lending an ear to gripe about travel can be the start of a couples friendship."
And when you finally find another pair you'd like to get to know better, consider your opening line carefully! "'Come here often?' is a fail," Masini says. "A much better way to introduce yourselves is to focus on what it is you have in common — whether you're all four lingering in front of a Rodin sculpture at the art museum and can't tear yourselves away — or one of you from each couple is lingering, and other two of you from the two couples are beyond ready for lunch. Something as simple as a compliment or a comment about your mutual interest will work, like, 'I could just stay here all day,' regarding the sculpture, will work."
