Tastings sure are fun. But all that sugar can make you come crashing down especially if you're trying to keep a certain weight level. And no one wants to wake up the next morning to a crippling cake hangover. "Excessive amounts of sugar have also been linked to issues like anxiety, depression, fatigue, and digestive problems— think diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramps," says Kristi King, MPH, RD, a clinical instructor of at Baylor College of Medicine. Here's how to stay on track before and after sampling all those delicious desserts.
You don't want to go to a tasting hungry— you're just setting yourself up to go wild. "Two or three hours before it would be smart to eat some kind of lean protein and a bunch of vegetables," says holistic nutrition coach Cheryl Harris, MPH, RD. If you have a pretty balanced meal beforehand, the sugar rush and crash are less likely to hit you than if you cake-test on an empty stomach, Harris says.

Move your body afterward.
"Going for a walk or doing something that's going to move your body will help lower your blood sugar and you'll certainly feel better," says Harris.
Set a two-bite limit.
"Research shows that we taste the first two to three bites but after that we're eating to recreate bite No. 1," says Harris. "So when you're doing a cake tasting, split the piece with your mom, fiancé, or whoever is coming with you and shoot for two bites of each type of cake."
