My brother is giving me away, as both our parents are deceased. Should he be seated at the head table? And if so, does that mean his girlfriend has to sit there as well? We really do not get along. —Kate M. of Dublin, Ireland, via email
You could nix the head table and sprinkle your VIPs and attendants throughout the room. However, if your heart is set on sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with your nearest and dearest, you have to take the high road here. If you want your brother at your table, you have to sacrifice a seat for his girlfriend. Choose a bigger table if you wish; she won't sit next to you, in any case. I'd be shocked if her proximity bothers you, as you will be busy greeting all of your guests, listening to toasts, and dancing up a storm. You're the star of the day—forget about her and enjoy it.
