In our new Flower of the Week series, we'll bring you all things flower, from the cost, to the season, to the little details you need to ask your florist. This is your go-to guide for blooms ranging from ranunculi to rose. So take a minute to stop and smell (and read!) every "flower Friday."
The English Romantic poet John Keats first coined the name “sweet pea” and the blossom became so popular that it was incorporated into the floral emblem for Edwardian England. In France, it’s even considered to be a good luck omen for brides to carry sweet peas.
The sweet pea blooms from late spring to early summer. It can still possible to get some varieties in other seasons, but they will be more expensive.
The soft, loose look of the sweet pea lends itself to more romantic, fresh-from-the garden type bouquets and arrangements. This is not the flower for a super modern look (although an all-white sweet pea bouquet can be très chic).
Sweet peas come in a wide range of colors, including everything from pale blush and cream to deep purple and reds. We love the more neutral tones when pairing with bright face flowers like coral charm peonies.
Depending on the variety, sweet pea prices can vary from medium range (if you are getting in-season from a local grower) to expensive (there are incredible Japanese varieties available on the market these days, but the cost is much higher).
These flowers are more on the delicate side and are susceptible to wilting in the heat. Make sure to keep your bouquet in water and out of direct sunlight until it’s time to walk down the aisle!
It works well with...
The sweet pea plays extremely well with others—it can blend in seamlessly with a variety of other blooms, especially in arrangements that veer more loose and romantic in style. Combine with other late spring and early summer flowers like garden roses, peonies, and lilacs. Sweet peas are also beautiful on their own as a monofleur arrangement—try varying the tones between white and pale lavender or blush to add subtle contrast.
