Building a great working relationship with your vendors all starts with respect. Of course you know to be kind and polite, but it goes beyond the basics. Know when your vendors are working and when they're taking days off (hint: it's usually Monday or Tuesday!), and respect their office hours. Sure, during a wedding they're working from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., but on a regular work day, most wedding vendors keep fairly traditional office hours, so don't expect them to answer the phone at 9 p.m.. You should also respect their process. They've done this hundreds, if not thousands, of times, so acknowledge that there's a reason they do things a certain way.
You also need to communicate clearly. There's a big reason wedding pros prefer email over text messages and scheduled meetings over off-the-cuff phone calls: They're better equipped to work with you when they know they'll be hearing from you, and it's much harder to miss details when they're outlined in an email.
Even if you know EXACTLY what you want your wedding to look like, allow your vendors a little creative flexibility. You've hired them because you love what they do, so collaborate with them to see what they might come up with instead of creating a carbon copy of something you saw in a magazine. Your vendors will love getting to stretch their creative muscles, and the two of you will probably dream up something even more amazing when you're brainstorming together!
And of course, treat them like people! Yes, you're the client, but that doesn't mean they don't have other things going on in their lives. Ask about their kids, like or comment on their Instagram posts, and at least start meetings and phone calls with a brief "How are you doing?", even if you need to get down to business. Be friendly and show that you're excited to have them on board, and they'll be more excited to work with you come wedding day.
